    2024 IPL Season Highlights

The 17th edition of the IPL was different than other seasons due to the amount of runs belted in majority of the venues. The season was personified by the attacking approach of the batters with record-breaking scores piled up by teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Mumbai Indians among others.

The Kolkata-based franchise dominated the group stages, finishing at the top of the table, followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While the Bengaluru side and Rajasthan failed to gleam in the knockouts, Hyderabad squared off against the Knight Riders, only to incur an embarrassing defeat in the grand finale. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians finished as the wooden spoon as a captaincy transition didn’t go as planned for the five-time champions.

When zoomed into the individual numbers, Virat Kohli topped the batting charts with 741 runs at an average of 61.75 while Harshal Patel scalped 24 wickets, having bowled the majority of his overs in the slog-over phase. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakaravarthy and Mumbai Indians’ Jasprit Bumrah were equally good with the ball, finishing second and third in the most wicket-takers list with 21 and 20 scalps respectively.

The season was unique in different ways as it saw 250-plus scores being piled up on seven occasions in a span of two months. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the highest-ever total in an IPL innings. The same game witnessed the highest powerplay score of 125/0, courtesy of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s blitz. They touched the hundred-run mark in the fifth over, which was the highest by any team in IPL history.

    IPL Winners of Each Year

    2008

The Rajasthan Royals emerged as the inaugural champions of the IPL, clinching victory in a thrilling final showdown against the Chennai Super Kings by three wickets. Yusuf Pathan was awarded the Player of the Match in the final for his 39-ball 56 and 3-22 with the ball. The match went down to the last ball, before the Shane Warne-led side managed to emerge winners.

    2009

The second edition of the IPL was won by the now-defunct Deccan Charges under the captaincy of Adam Gilchrist. In the final, they defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs. The Player of the Match award, though, went to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Anil Kumble.

    2010

IPL 2011 was won by the Chennai Super Kings for the second successive season after defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 58 runs in the final in Chennai. Murali Vijay was named Man of the Match for his 52-ball 95 which helped the Super Kings post 205, in response to which the Daniel Vettori-led side managed just 147.

    2012

    2016

Chennai Super Kings won their fourth IPL title in 2021 after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final by 27 runs. They successfully defended 192 on the back of a combined bowling effort.

    2022

Debuting team Gujarat Titans, under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, won the IPL 2022 season. They defeated Rajasthan Royals twice in the playoffs to take home the trophy. Captain Pandya was also the Player of the Match in the final.

    2023

Chennai Super Kings equalled Mumbai's record of five trophies by winning their fifth title in IPL 2023. The result of the game was decided via the DLS method after rain interrupted the game. Super Kings’ Devon Conway was named the Player of the Match for his 25-ball 47.

    2024
