There was no significant player release this time from the Mumbai Indians’ side prior to the auction. In another big move, Mumbai Indians replaced their successful captain Rohit Sharma and named Hardik Pandya as the captain for IPL 2024. It came as a major shock for the team’s fans as Sharma played an instrumental role in the side winning 5 titles. I think it was purely a cricketing decision. We saw the window period to get Hardik back as a player. For me, it's a transition phase.

Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mark Boucher on captaincy change

Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher commented on the issue, “I think it was purely a cricketing decision. We saw the window period to get Hardik back as a player. For me it's a transition phase. A lot of people don't understand in India, people get quite emotional, but you know you take the emotions away from it. I think it's just more of a cricketing decision that was made and I do think it is going to bring the best out of Rohit as a person as a player.”

    2024 IPL player auction

In the mini-auction held on December 19, 2023, Mumbai Indians entered with a purse of INR 17.75 crore. The funds were generated by the release of the aforementioned players and after the trades were made, MI was left with INR 12.75 crore. IPL added INR 5 crore each to every team for the auction taking Mumbai’s auction purse to INR 17.75 crore. The side was allowed a maximum of 8 players to be bought with 4 slots each for Indian and overseas players.

Following are the players Mumbai Indians acquired in the mini-auction.

With the batting order already strengthened with the additions of Pandya and Shepherd, Mumbai Indians looked to bolster their bowling attack and picked up 5 all-rounders and 3 bowlers in the auction.

23-year-old South African fast bowling allrounder Gerald Coetzee was the costliest buy for Mumbai Indians in the 2024 auction. With a base price of INR 2 crore, Coetzee was eventually sold for INR 5 crore with MI getting into bidding wars with Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants for the pace bowler.

Mumbai Indians also acquired the Sri Lankan fast bowling duo of Dilshan Madushanka and Nuwan Thushara for INR 4.6 crore and INR 4.8 crore respectively. Madushanka is a left-arm pacer and has emerged as a young leader of the Lankan pace attack especially in the white ball formats. Madushanka impressed Mumbai Indians' global head of cricket Mahela Jayawardene during the World Cup. Madushanka picked up 21 wickets in 9 matches and was the best Lankan player in the tournament.

Nuwan Thushara is known to bowl with a similar action as Lasith Malinga who won plenty of games for Mumbai Indians and is also part of the current coaching staff. Thushara was also picked by MI Cape Town for the SA20 competition and now will be an important cog in the wheel for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

The other overseas pick for Mumbai Indians in the auction is former Afghanistan captain and off-spinning allrounder Mohammad Nabi. Acquired for his base price of INR 1.5 crore, Nabi has the experience of playing in the league as he was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders previously.

Mumbai Indians filled the remaining 4 slots with uncapped players Shreyas Gopal, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kambhoj and Shivalik Sharma. Gopal made his IPL debut for MI back in 2014 and since has featured for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad as well. An experienced leg spinner from Karnataka, Gopal can support senior pro-Piyush Chawla in the team.

The pace attack had further additions with Haryana’s young sensation Anshul Kambhoj who picked up 15 wickets in 10 games during the 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Naman Dhir from Punjab is a lower-order attacking batter who bowls off-spin whereas Shivalik Sharma is a left-handed lower-order batter who strikes the long ball and also bowls right-arm wrist spin.
