Most Successful F1 Teams: Top Constructors & Championship Wins

The success of Formula 1 teams is primarily measured by the Constructors’ Championship and Drivers’ Championship. Whilst the former is awarded to the team with the most overall points accumulated through the season, the latter is given to the individual driver with the greatest number of points. Sustained excellence usually translates into domination and with that being said, Ferrari holds the title as the most successful and iconic team in F1 history. Together, with an incredible fanbase, the red of Ferrari is widely accepted as Formula 1’s flagship team!

Top 10 Most Successful F1 Teams

These are some of the greatest names in F1 history. The trailblazers and teams that have etched their name into F1 history.

Ferrari – The Undisputed F1 Powerhouse

They are the most successful team in F1 history. They have a record number of championships – 16 Constructors’ Championships and 15 Drivers’ Championships. Whilst they dominated during the 1950s, 1970s and 2000s, the arrival (and subsequent dominance) of Michael Schumacher has gone a long way in ensuring they remain a household name for F1 fans.

Williams – Engineering Their Way to 9 Constructors’ Titles

Boasting 9 Constructors’ titles and 7 Drivers’ titles of their own, Williams also enjoys their rightful place in history. Dominating the 1980s and 1990s, Williams had notable drivers such as Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost in their ranks.

Known for engineering brilliance, they have almost perfected achieving success without always holding the biggest budget.

McLaren – The Pride of Great Britain

A team highly competitive through the latter half of the 90s, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost dominated the sport in the famous colours of McLaren. Their biggest success to date is arguably securing back-to-back titles of 1988 and 1990.

Despite a relatively quieter period in recent times, their legacy and innovation look to be on the mend once again and surely won’t be long before achieving success again.

    Mercedes – A Modern Juggernaut

Although Mercedes holds 8 Constructors’ titles, dominating between 2014 and 2020, their 7 Drivers’ titles have largely been due to the success of Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton, largely considered the greatest driver in history, owns six of those titles on his own!

Their recent dominance has been simply unparallel in the modern era. They remain a global powerhouse and have largely cemented their name in F1 history as a team with incredible innovation and precision racing.

    Lotus – Often Unfairly Forgotten

A dominant – and often forgotten – force in the early 90s, Lotus once held drivers like the legendary Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna in their ranks. Known for their innovative car design and incredibly advanced chassis development, Lotus holds 7 Constructors’ titles and 6 Drivers’ championships of their own. One wonders how they would interpret the modern rules and updated regulations.

Who could forget those iconic lotus yellow-and-black F1 cars?!

Red Bull – The Max Show?

Red Bull has 6 Constructors’ titles and 8 Drivers’ championships. Their rise to dominance was largely under the auspices of Messrs. Vettel and Verstappen. They are arguably currently enjoying a golden era and do not look to be letting their foot slip off the pedal.

Through a combination of innovation and competitive team drivers, Red Bull looks to raise the bar in F1 and continue to ensure their legacy is numbered among the very best in our sport.

Cooper – You Remember Them Don’t You?

While they may only have 2 of each title to hold on to, Cooper is largely responsible for and associated with the pioneering of F1 car’s rear-engine cars on the circuit. Their impact completely overhauled the way in which racing engineering was conceptualized and we see remnants of that impact still on the circuit today.

    Brabham – The Strategic Leaders

A racing team who contributed to racing strategies in F1, Brabham are another team who hold 2 Constructors’ titles and 4 Drivers’ championships. The engineering associated with this brand was arguably ahead of their time, it is just a shame to see them often forgotten by the modern narrative.

    Renault – That Fernando Double

2 Drivers’ championships and another 2 Constructors’ to add to their trophy cabinet, who can forget the Fernando Alonso double feat in 2005 and 2006? They are another team seemingly absorbed into the flannels of history.

Vanwall, BRM, Matra, Tyrrell, Benetton, Brawn

All of them hold a single Constructors’ title but they have greatly added to the history of Formula 1.

Vanwall was the first British team to win a Constructors’ title and gave rise to Britain’s impact in the sport. BRM combined technological advancement and the skills of Graham Hill to see their name etched in history. Matra was the first to win a Constructors’ title for a French manufacturer. Tyrrell saw victory come through their innovative inclusion of a monocoque chassis which paved the way for safety and performance on the track.

Benetton were famous for their slick pit stops, but saw their improvement coincide with the arrival of a certain Michael Schumacher.

Brawn GP is still possibly the greatest underdog story in F1 history. Rising from the remnants of Honda in 2008, their developments around aerodynamics saw them land a huge win.

    Conclusion

The history of F1 is littered with incredible stories, triumphs and fleeting dominance – we wouldn’t want it any other way! In a sport which prioritizes innovation and advancements in the sport, it is clear to see that almost every constructor on the circuit has contributed to the overall success of this sport.

From the domination of Ferrari, the heroic story of Brawn GP, drivers like Hamilton to Schumacher and even then, to Senna, the talent which has graced an F1 circuit over the course of history is simply humbling.

It’s one of the greatest sports on the planet, one with the greatest reliance on innovation and niche aspects, yet it still captures the imagination of sports fans across the globe.
