Initially playing in the middle order, it wasn't until he was promoted to open the batting that his ODI career truly took off. Known for his elegant stroke play, Sharma has become one of the most successful ODI batsmen in the world. He holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs - 264 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014 - and is the only player to have scored three double centuries in the format. Over the years, Sharma has amassed over 10,000 runs, establishing himself as a cornerstone of India's batting lineup.

209 vs Australia in 2013

Rohit Sharma’s 209 against Australia on November 2, 2013, in Bangalore is one of his greatest knocks. This innings was Sharma’s first double century in ODIs, making him only the third player to achieve this feat at the time. The other two players who had scored double centuries in the format were Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

Coming in as an opener, Sharma played a measured knock initially, pacing his innings with precision. He reached his century off 114 balls but then shifted gears dramatically. His next 109 runs came off just 42 deliveries. His innings was laced with 12 fours and a record 16 sixes. Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan put on 112 runs for the opening wicket.

Sharma’s knock was the backbone of India's imposing total of 383/6. Australia, despite a valiant effort, fell short in their chase, managing 326 all out. Throughout the series, the opener was in fine form, scoring 491 runs and averaging an astounding 122.

264 against Sri Lanka in 2014

Rohit Sharma’s 264 off 173 against Sri Lanka on November 13, 2014, at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, is the highest individual score in ODI history - a record that still stands. Sharma’s monumental innings was a display of sheer dominance.

Opening the innings, Sharma started cautiously, reaching his fifty in 72 balls. However, once he settled in, he unleashed a barrage of shots, punishing the Sri Lankan bowlers all around the park. He reached his century off 100 balls, and from there, his scoring rate skyrocketed. Sharma's next 164 runs came off just 73 balls, with 33 fours and 9 sixes. This was only the fourth-ever double hundred in the 50-over format.

India posted a massive total of 404/5, largely due to Sharma’s extraordinary knock. Sri Lanka, overwhelmed by the target, could only manage 251 in response, giving India a resounding 153-run victory.

Unbeaten 208 against Sri Lanka in 2017

Rohit Sharma's unbeaten 208 against Sri Lanka on December 13, 2017, in Mohali was his third double century in ODIs, making him the only player in history to achieve this remarkable feat.

As captain of the Indian team in this match, Sharma led from the front. After starting steadily, he accelerated his scoring as the innings progressed. He reached his century off 115 balls, setting the stage for a late onslaught. In the last 36 balls, Sharma added another 108 runs, including 13 fours and 12 sixes, dismantling the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

India finished their innings at 392/4, a total too daunting for Sri Lanka, who managed just 251/8 in their 50 overs.
