Tottenham captain Cristian Romero is heading for a dramatic Spurs exit after being ruled out for the rest of the season, with the Argentine defender now widely expected to walk away this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

In a campaign that has unravelled in spectacular fashion, Tottenham are facing the once-unthinkable prospect of relegation from the Premier League, and Romero looks set to be one of the first high-profile casualties.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who is not out of contract until 2029, is poised to become one of the most sought-after free players in the game.

SportsBoom understands he has a clause in his current deal that allows him to leave if Spurs go down.

And with sources close to the player making it clear he has no interest in playing Championship football, the writing is already on the wall.

EVENTFUL

Romero’s time in North London has been eventful. Initially joining on loan in the 2021-22 season, he has gone on to spend four full campaigns with Spurs, racking up 156 appearances in all competitions, including 123 in the Premier League - and scoring 13 goals.

A tough-tackling, front-foot defender, he quickly established himself as a fan favourite and eventually club captain.

Before his move to England, Romero built his reputation in Serie A with spells at Atalanta BC and Juventus, earning recognition as one of Europe’s most aggressive and effective defenders.

On the international stage, he remains a key figure for Argentina, winning 49 caps and proving his pedigree at the very highest level.

But this season has told a different story.

A poor disciplinary record has seen Romero miss key games through suspension, while his outspoken criticism of the club on social media has only deepened tensions behind the scenes.

UPHEAVAL

Add in managerial upheaval and a run of disastrous results, and frustrations have boiled over.

Now, with Spurs in freefall, Romero appears ready to move on - and there is no shortage of suitors.

Manchester United are understood to have made early enquiries as they look to add proven quality to their defence.

United view Romero as a ready-made solution, experienced, battle-hardened, and still very much in his prime.

But the Red Devils face competition. Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are also understood to have made tentative checks, while several other Premier League and European clubs are circling, aware that a player of Romero’s calibre becoming available on a free transfer is a rare opportunity.
