Marc Cucurella’s Chelsea days appear to be numbered, potentially of his own making, after an explosive interview about the club’s transfer strategy and managerial decisions.
Now La Liga leaders Barcelona have been alerted to a player they regard as one of their own, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Pundits and sceptics have suggested the Spanish star’s outburst while on recent international duty was to engineer a move away from Stamford Bridge, potentially as early as this summer.
He questioned the wisdom of Chelsea’s policy to sign younger, inexperienced players and gave his staunch backing to former boss Enzo Maresca.
Contracted to the Blues until 2028, the 28-year-old left back/wing back would command a big fee.
But that won’t put off Barcelona if the former Brighton favourite wants to end his Premier League career.
Catalan Native
Cucurella is a Catalan native, came through the junior ranks at the Camp Nou and also had loan spells with Eibar and Getafe.
Because of the politics, he won’t contemplate a move to Real Madrid. But Barca is an enticing prospect for Cucurella, both in terms of silverware potential and financial renumeration.
Manchester City were once in the market to sign the instantly recognisable defender before Chelsea swooped and paid Brighton £60million in 2022.
But that interest has now gone, especially after the emergence of Carabao Cup final hero, Nico O'Reilly
Chelsea also previously rejected a substantial offer from Saudi Pro League outfit, Al-Nassr.
However, like many other deals involving moves to the Middle East, the prospect looks less inviting because of the ongoing conflict.
Even when the war ends there will be still a reluctance of players to commit their futures to an uncertain aftermath.
So, La Liga and Barcelona look the best possible outcome for Cucurella. Other Catalan orientated options include Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao but they wouldn’t offer the hirsute player the same incentives at this stage of his career.
