Exclusive: Khalil Rountree ‘Firing on All Cylinders’ Ahead of UFC 320 Clash with Jiri Prochazka, says Coach John Wood
Khalil Rountree is set to face Jiri Prochazka at UFC 320 in a fight predicted to be the "Fight of the Night." Coach John Wood believes Rountree is at his best and aims to secure a title shot. Rountree's resilience and dedication to improvement impress Wood, who praises Rountree's champion mindset after a previous loss.

Khalil Rountree aims to get back into title contention when he faces former light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka at UFC 320.
Coming off a unanimous decision win over former champion Jamahal Hill, Rountree is eager to make a statement.
John Wood, Rountree’s head coach at Syndicate MMA, believes the light heavyweight showdown has all the makings of being Fight of the Night.
In an exclusive conversation, produced in collaboration with The Game Plan, Wood shared his take on Rountree’s bout with Prochazka.
The featured light heavyweight clash is significant, as an impressive performance and decisive win could possibly secure a title shot for the winner.
Wood also discussed Rountree resilience following his previous title loss to Alex Pereira, detailing how the fighter has come back stronger than ever.
“[Prochazka vs. Rountree] is a hell of a fight,” Wood told SportsBoom.com.
“It’s gonna be a violent fight, it’s going to be, I think, Fight of the Night type of fight. There is no doubt in my mind. I just cannot see a world where this fight goes three rounds.”
Wood noted that both Rountree and Prochazka’s aggressive fighting styles are a recipe for an unforgettable fight.
“You’re talking about two of the most violent men, strikers, and just fighters in the sport that are going to go at it. I don’t think either one of them backs down,” he added.
ROUNTREE FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS
Wood shared a glimpse into Rountree’s preparation for his UFC 320 bout against Prochazka.
His quick turnaround from his previous bout in June reflects his dedication to capitalize on a massive opportunity.
Prochazka vs. Rountree is on the same card as the light heavyweight title rematch between Alex Pereira and champion Magomed Ankalaev, further elevating the stakes.
Wood emphasized that Rountree is in peak form and prepared to make a statement.
“This is the best version of [Rountree] that I’ve seen in the last 13 years. The most focused. He really is focusing on MMA as a whole now."
Wood also revealed that focusing on areas of Rountree’s skill set that need more improvement has been a key part of their strategy. The goal is to ensure that Prochazka has no edge over him in the fight.
“Knowing that, ‘Hey, there’s some gaps and holes and things we need to fix, not even fix, but things we need to add to make sure that we not only get past Jiri, but are able to make a run at that [light heavyweight title] and capture that gold," he added.
A CHAMPION’S MINDSET
Wood also praised Rountree’s mindset, particularly after his bounce-back win over Hill. Rather than dwell on his previous loss, he continued to believe in himself and proved he belonged at the upper echelon of the light heavyweight division.
“[Rountree] has hit the next level in belief and believing in himself, and the drive that he really does want this, and so it really is the mental part."
Acknowledging that losses happen in MMA, Wood encourages his fighters to turn setbacks into added motivation for their next fight.
“No one should ever be okay with losing, but it really is about being okay that that’s part of [the sport] and it has to drive you to get better and want to come back better, and that’s what it’s done to Khalil,” he concluded.
