Since swapping the Turkish Süper Lig for the tactical intensity of Serie A, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has emerged as one of Lazio’s standout performers. For fans looking to add another layer of excitement to Serie A matches, many turn to reputable online betting sites to follow the action and even bet on football games, including Lazio's.
The Nigerian international, signed from Hatayspor, has seamlessly adapted to life in Rome, impressing with his technical brilliance, tactical awareness, and relentless energy in midfield.
Although injuries briefly halted his momentum, the Manchester City academy product is back stronger and more determined, embracing both the challenges and opportunities that come with wearing the famous sky blue of Lazio.
In this exclusive sit-down, the 24-year-old opens up about his decision to join Lazio, his take on Italian football, his preferred position, and how his footballing journey, from England to Turkey to Italy, is shaping the player he's becoming.
Why Lazio? “They Fit Everything I Wanted”
With interest from multiple clubs across Europe, many were curious about Dele-Bashiru’s decision to join Lazio. For him, it was a no-brainer.
“I accepted the project because, at this stage of my career, this is what I want. I want to be playing high-level football in a top league, and also for a big club—and Lazio, they fit everything I wanted perfectly," he told SportsBoom.com.
His arrival was greeted with optimism, and his performances so far have more than justified the club's belief in him.
Tactical Football, Italian Style
Moving to Serie A meant adjusting to one of the most tactically demanding leagues in world football; something Dele-Bashiru relishes.
“My idea of Italian football? It's a lot more tactically demanding than some other leagues, and that’s a challenge I’m relishing at the moment.”
That adjustment, he admits, took some time. But now, he’s beginning to thrive under the tactical rigours and positional discipline expected in Italy.
Finding his footing after injury setbacks
Just as he began to hit top form, injuries briefly interrupted his rhythm. But Dele-Bashiru says he’s turned that corner.
“Of course, like everyone knows, I've had a few injuries that have been in the way of my progress, but I’m feeling a lot better, a lot stronger now. I’ve understood the tactical side that the coach wants, the team wants.”
That understanding, he believes, is critical to Lazio having a strong finish to the season.
A true Box-to-Box force
Ask Dele-Bashiru about his ideal role on the pitch, and he’s clear: he thrives in the engine room.
“My preferred role would be as a box-to-box midfielder, in the number 8 or 10 positions.”
His strengths? A dynamic mix of power, timing, and intelligence—traits he believes are key to his effectiveness at Lazio.
“Driving of the ball, running off the ball, I can attack well, and defend well also. All around, I’m what you describe as a box-to-box midfielder. And as long as I’m 100 percent fit and I’ve gotten everything understood tactically, we definitely would have a very good season together.”
Manchester Roots, Growth in Turkey, Brilliance in Rome
Tracing Dele-Bashiru’s development takes us from Manchester City’s famed academy to Hatayspor in Turkey, and now to the grandeur of the Stadio Olimpico.
“Of course, the foundation you get at Manchester City is very top level. Also, the Turkish league is at a decent level.”
“As for Serie A, of course, it took maybe a while to adapt 100% to the league, but I think my mentality is correct. The coaches, my teammates; they’re all helping me. Yeah, I think all of it has been important for me, and we’re all having a good season.”
Still only 24, Dele-Bashiru is growing into a midfield powerhouse. With Lazio pushing for European qualification and the Super Eagles eyeing the next phase of their evolution, his journey is one to watch closely.
As he returns to full fitness, the Lazio faithful, and Nigerian fans worldwide will be hoping to see even more of the dynamic, tireless midfield engine who’s quietly becoming a key figure in both club and country.
