Everton’s season began with the usual sighs after a flat defeat at Leeds. Things brightened up quite fast after the arrival of supposedly washed-up Jack Grealish arrived. That's their longest drought since the late nineties, and it shows! With injuries piling up, goalless in four, and just one point to show for the start of the season, Emery’s notebook must be filled with crossed out plans and very few answers.

Everton finally look like a team that can win football matches on purpose. The limp defeat to Leeds was exactly what fans feared, but then Brighton came to town and left empty-handed, and Wolves were dragged into a five-goal scrap that the Toffees actually managed to win.

The difference? Obvious fan favourite, David Moyes, has stitched together a side that does not collapse at the first sign of trouble. Grealish has been the new star attraction, popping up with four assists already, while Garner and Ndiaye have chipped in with the sort of goals Everton normally put wide of the corner flag. Defensively, they still creak when pushed, but Pickford continues to bail them out in his usual eccentric way. Fifth in the table might not sound like much, but for Everton it is practically a victory parade.

Four league matches without scoring is not just bad form, it is Villa’s longest drought since the late nineties.
