Pre-Game Outlook: Newcastle Looking for Spark, Wolves Still Flimsy

Newcastle have started the season like a side carrying a hangover. A steady draw at Villa was followed by a 3-2 collapse against Liverpool and then a drab 0-0 at Leeds. Two goals scored in three matches is not the form of a side with European ambitions. Losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool has taken away their cutting edge, and Anthony Gordon is banned for three matches after his red card against Liverpool. Howe is juggling lineups with Joelinton out injured, Sandro Tonali being carefully managed, and Fabian Schär only just back after concussion.

Wolves are no better off. Three games, three defeats, and a defence that has shipped eight goals already. City toyed with them, Bournemouth took advantage, and Everton nicked three points in a five-goal mess. Jørgen Strand Larsen remains their only consistent threat, but he is also the centre of a transfer saga after Wolves rejected a £55m bid from this weekend’s opponent. He is expected to start, but the question is whether his head is in the game.

Newcastle: Current Form – DLD

The Magpies have been frustrating to watch. A goalless draw at Villa was followed by a chaotic 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool, before they failed to score again at Leeds. Without Isak, who has left for Liverpool, they lack a natural finisher. Gordon’s suspension only makes it worse.

The midfield at least still has quality. Tonali, if fit, adds structure, while Bruno Guimarães continues to carry too much responsibility. Jacob Ramsey looked lively in his full debut and Will Osula could get the nod up front. Newcastle’s xG of 2.87 suggests goals should be coming, but fans are tired of hearing about expected goals when the scoreboard keeps reading zero.

  • Will Osula: Inheriting the striker role with Isak gone. Big pressure for a young forward, but his showing against a team defending champions Liverpool promise big things to come.

Newcastle will have to make do without several key men. Alexander Isak has already been sold to Liverpool, Anthony Gordon begins his three-match suspension, and Joelinton remains sidelined with a groin injury. Sandro Tonali is being carefully managed after a shoulder problem but is expected to feature, while Fabian Schär has cleared concussion protocols and should return to the back line. Jacob Ramsey is set to keep his place after an energetic full debut, and summer signing Malick Thiaw is pushing to make his first start.

Wolves: Current Form – LLL

Wolves are a study in self-inflicted problems. City swatted them aside, Bournemouth picked them off, and Everton beat them in a game where defending seemed optional. Eight goals conceded in three matches is all the evidence you need.

Strand Larsen is the main talking point. He wanted the move, Newcastle wanted him, Wolves will not sell, and in the now he must lead the line against the very side chasing him. New Zimbabwean attacker Marshall Munetsi has been asked to fulfil the role of two massive departures. Gomes returns to restore some bite in midfield alongside Toti Gomes, who served his suspension and slots back in to bring the energy to a lacklustre Wolves midfield.

  • Jørgen Strand Larsen: Wolves’ only reliable scorer and the subject of Newcastle’s rejected £55m bid, he should get the minutes, and he will show why Newcastle wanted him to replace Isak.
  • Marshall Munetsi: Direct and dangerous but needs better finishing, his assist against Everton was a cross many would struggle to make, expect more from the Zimbabwean.
  • João Gomes: The Wolves player of the 24/25 season brings energy and aggression in midfield, but that form has seemingly evaporated with the departure of Cunha and Fabio Silva, he needs to find new connections.

Strand Larsen is expected to start despite Newcastle’s transfer interest failing, with the Norwegian leading the line once again. João Gomes, David Moller Wolfe, and Marshall Munetsi were rested in midweek but what the international break had in store for them could prove challenging. Toti Gomes is also available again after serving his suspension and featured against Everton.
