Pichichi Trophy: Recent History of Top Scorers in La Liga

Spanish tabloid newspaper Marca awards the Pichichi Trophy to the top scorer in La Liga. Named after Athletic Club de Bilbao player Rafael “Pichichi” Moreno, the trophy has been handed out yearly since the 1952/53 season. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the top two highest scorers in La Liga history. They collectively won eleven Pichichi Trophies.

The Argentinian won the award eight times, Ronaldo three during their epic rivalry. Hugo Sánchez, Alfredo di Stéfano, and Quini all won the award five times; only Messi has won more. Between the 2009/10 and 2021/22 seasons, Luis Suárez (2015/16) was the only player to top score in La Liga other than Messi and Ronaldo.

Since they departed Spain, there has been a different winner of the coveted Pichichi Trophy for the last three years. Karim Benzema topped the charts in 2021/22, scoring 27 goals in 32 games for Real Madrid. Robert Lewandowski claimed the prize the following season. The Barcelona forward won the award with 23 goals from 34 matches to finish top scorer in La Liga in 2022/23. Dovbyk took home the title this year.
