Newcastle Ready £60m Lucas Bergvall Bid After Tottenham Reject Opening Offer

Newcastle United are preparing to launch a blockbuster bid worth more than £50 million to prise Lucas Bergvall away from Tottenham after seeing an opening offer knocked back, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Magpies have already tested Spurs' resolve with an initial package worth £46 million plus add-ons, but the North London club rejected the approach as they look to keep hold of one of Europe's brightest young midfielders.

However, that has deterred Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. 

The club remains convinced they can strike a deal before the new Premier League season kicks off and are now ready to increase their offer beyond the £50 million mark. 

Our sources have indicated the club is willing to go as high as £60 million if that is what it takes to land the highly-rated Sweden international.

The 20-year-old is under contract at Tottenham until June 2031, but SportsBoom understands Bergvall has spoken to the club and would prefer a move away from North London in search of a fresh challenge.

ENCOURAGEMENT

That revelation has handed Newcastle fresh encouragement as Howe looks to rebuild the heart of his midfield following a dramatic summer of change at St James' Park.

The Magpies have already banked a huge fee after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, while Bruno Guimaraes continues to be strongly tipped for a big-money move to Premier League champions Arsenal.

With fresh funds available, Howe is determined to reinvest quickly and views Bergvall as one of the outstanding young midfielders in European football.

The Stockholm-born playmaker has attracted admirers from across the Premier League throughout the transfer window. 

Aston Villa were among the clubs keeping close tabs on his situation before ultimately turning their attention to Switzerland international Johann Manzambi.

Bournemouth also explored a move for Bergvall as they prepared for the possible departure of Alex Scott, who continues to be tipped for a switch away from the south coast this summer. 

OBSTACLE

But Newcastle now believe they have moved to the front of the queue and are confident personal terms will not prove an obstacle if they can strike an agreement with Tottenham.

Bergvall has already earned 14 senior caps for Sweden despite his young age and has continued to enhance his growing reputation with his performances in the Premier League.

He featured 23 times in the league for Tottenham last season after making 27 appearances during his first campaign in North London, but it is understood Spurs are happy to cash in, having done a decent amount of business in the transfer window already with the arrival of Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Ironically, Nottingham Forest made Bergvall one of their leading transfer targets last summer when Elliot Anderson was heavily linked with Manchester City. 

That move has since gone through this summer in a staggering £116 million deal, while Forest missed out on Bergvall.

Now Newcastle are hoping persistence will finally pay off as they push to land one of the Premier League's most exciting young midfield talents before the transfer window slams shut.
