Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho, in an exclusive sit-down opened up about his surprise loan move from Sevilla to Middlesbrough, his return to English football, the emotional journey from Africa to Manchester City as a teenager, and what it truly means to be back in familiar territory.
With a goal and two assists under his belt, Iheanacho is focused, fired up, and full of belief that Boro can make a push for Premier League promotion.
Iheanacho on his Boro move
Having made the switch to Championship side Middlesbrough from Spanish La Liga outfit Sevilla in January, Iheanacho described the transition as swift and seamless.
"It's a lovely place, I feel welcomed by everyone, so I'm really happy."
Despite interest from several clubs, Iheanacho said it was the atmosphere, ambition, and the connection with Middlesbrough’s coaching staff that sealed the deal.
"Everything, to be fair. Obviously, a good, cultured team. I've played against them a few times. I think it's a really good club and the manager is a really nice guy."
"I've been speaking to him as well. It's a really good team and I'm so happy to be here so far."
"Hopefully, we'll get through to the Premier League. That's the goal, and hopefully, I'll continue to have a good experience here and enjoy it as well."
Man City Days
Iheanacho’s journey in European football began with Manchester City, a transition he describes as life-changing.
"It was big. Coming to England and different cultures, I enjoyed the change of environment. I enjoyed it quite well there and it was really lovely."
"I'm proud of the culture here now, so I'm loving it."
A learning curve in Sevilla
Before returning to England, Iheanacho had a stint with Spanish giants Sevilla; a move that helped him grow both on and off the pitch.
"Obviously, it's good to get away and feel a good and different environment. It's a good atmosphere there and it's a great club. I love my experience there."
"Sevilla is a great team, so I'll be happy to go back there as well. But I'm here now, so I'm focusing on what we can achieve here."
Return to England: "It Feels Like Home"
For Iheanacho, his move to Middlesbrough was more than a loan spell, it felt like a return to where it all began.
"It feels like home now, coming back to England. I'm really enjoying my stay, so I'm happy."
While Iheanacho is not a fan of setting personal targets, his team goal is crystal clear.
"To be fair, I'm not a good fan of setting targets, but obviously, it will be collectively as a team, as a squad, to get to the Premier League."
"Obviously, it's one step at a time. Hopefully, we get there. We've got good guys in the team. Hopefully, we work together to achieve that goal. We'll see what happens."
