Talented Ghanaian midfielder Mawuli Mensah will not be leaving Betis Deportivo this summer, SportsBoom has been informed.
The youngster overcame cruciate ligament damage, suffered last year to return to action in the Primera Federación.
Now back to full fitness and raring to go in the upcoming season, the 21-year-old is understandably thrilled with the prospect of earning his senior team breakthrough for last season's Europa Conference league finalists, as he is set to be promoted by first team manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Sources close to the player's camp has revealed he has long been on the cusp of his senior team debut, while a call up to the national team is not far off, something the lad has long worked and yearned for.
"Mensah, his primary interest is getting game time with the Betis senior soon, so he has been informed about that", a source close to the player told SportsBoom.com.
"There is no rush with him because he's a player that is well appreciated, obviously due to his talents."
Mensah is contracted to Betis until the summer of 2026, but is open to extending with the Verdiblancos, having adapted seamlessly well with the club's youth project since joining.
Betis schedule in the upcoming season is very much packed, with the weight of juggling European and domestic ambitions likely to take its toll so Pellegrini would at some point want to add some fresh legs.
If the former Real Madrid and Manchester City manager turns to the club's reserves for some additional reinforcements, it is looking Mensah who has distinguished himself as one of the key players in there would be getting a look-in.
ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER YOUNGSTERS IN LA LIGA
Once heralded as the next big thing in Spanish football, it is worth noting that Mawuli was the case of a three-way battle between his current club Betis, Barcelona and Celta Vigo back in 2023 during his time with Segunda division side Antequera CF.
Betis won that race, having him signing on with the youth side on a three-year deal, with the player famously expressing his desire was to go on and play for the senior team.
"He was really disappointed with the injury that disrupted the strides he was making last season, but it is something we tried to guide him on."
"Thankfully, he put that behind him and looking forward to becoming an influential player for his team."
NATIONAL TEAM CALLING?
"Of course, he has every quality required to play for the Black Stars, so i would say yes, that would be a welcome development."
"But he really wants to get involved and show his talent at the seniors first, and I'm fully convinced he will get that soon. Any other thing that happens at this point of his career is a bonus."
That said, Mensah has long nursed a burning desire to take his trade to national level. From kicking about in the streets of Tefle in the Volta Region, there was every indication he was meant for greater things such like representing the nation even before he moved into Spain from Accra's Shooting Stars.
