Manchester United and Newcastle United are ready to battle it out for João Gomes this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder is set to leave Molineux at the end of the season, with Rob Edwards’ side destined to be relegated from the Premier League.
Despite his club’s miserable results in the top-flight this term, Gomes’ energy and technical ability have won him an army of admirers both at home and abroad with The Red Devils and The Magpies chief among them, according to sources.
Old Trafford chiefs are already drawing-up plans to bolster their squad’s options in central areas, after Casemiro confirmed he is set for pastures new once the present campaign draws to a close.
Their recruitment strategy will not change, no matter who is confirmed in permanent charge following Ruben Amorim’s sacking two months ago.
Indeed, even before Michael Carrick was appointed on an interim basis, SportsBoom understands the former Middlesbrough chief’s employers had already begun compiling dossiers on both Gomes and Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson.
Gomes Set for Big Move
The Magpies are also interested in the latter, having sold him to Forest in 2024. But as speculation continues to swirl around Sandro Tonali’s future in the North-East, Eddie Howe has begun exploring a number of alternatives too, with Gomes’ name understood to feature towards the top of that list.
The Brazilian is also likely to fit with Howe’s budget, as Newcastle’s owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, try to find ways of spending the riches at their disposal without breaking PL and UEFA financial regulations.
Aged 25 and already capped 10 times by his country, Gomes’ attractiveness to both The Red Devils and The Magpies is further enhanced by his potential and likely resale value should that be realised.
Previously of Flamengo, his experience of English football is another plus point with Gomes known to be keen to continue pursuing a career in this country.
