Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has been left disgruntled after his move to Roma collapsed, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Sources close to the player have said the Dutch international expected to be a Roma player by the end of the window.
The move has been mooted for months with Zirkzee struggling to make his mark at the Red Devils since his £36.5million move to Old Trafford last season.
Serie A giants Roma have seen their move for the 24-year-old collapse after the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
And Zirkzee is said to be disappointed his future has been left in limbo as United mov to appoint Amorim’s successor.
Roma's Sporting Director Ricky Massara said: "With regards to Zirkzee, at this moment Manchester United have completely closed off any discussion about the transfer market."
"As with the change of coach, they don’t want any movement. So it seems very improbable that they’ll change their minds."
Darren Fletcher is currently in short-term interim charge of the club with the Manchester United bigwigs expected to appoint an interim boss until thee end of the season in the coming days.
United expect a number of high-profile managers to become available after this summer’s World Cup and will not make a decision over their next permanent chief until then.
In Fletcher’s two games in charge, which saw them draw in the league at relegation-threatened Burnley and dumped out of the FA Cup at home to Brighton, Zirkzee featured as a second-half substitute.
It appears unlikely a change in leadership will result in a change of role for the former Bayern Munich and Bologna striker with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko ahead of him in the pecking order.
Poor Return
After seeing Rasmus Hojlund thrive in Italy since his summer loan move to Napoli, where he has scored nine goals so far this season, Zirkzee was keen to follow suit.
He has netted just twice this term and has struggled since his move to England under Erik ten Hag.
A return of just nine goals, and only five of those in the Premier League, has left Zirkzee seeking a move elsewhere and he is now in a state of limbo whilst United once again search for their next managerial appointment.
