Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka has admitted he is frustrated by his limited playing time at Brentford this season.
The 28-year-old returned to the Gtech Community Stadium in the summer after spending last season on loan at German Bundesliga side Augsburg, where he enjoyed regular football.
However, Onyeka’s situation has changed little since his return, with the midfielder struggling for minutes before leaving to join Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Limited opportunities in the Premier League
Onyeka has featured in just six Premier League matches for the Bees this season, all from the bench, totalling only 88 minutes.
He has, however, played a more prominent role in domestic cup competitions, appearing in three League Cup matches and clocking up 274 minutes.
Speaking exclusively to SportsBoom, Onyeka acknowledged his frustration but insisted he remains committed to working hard.
"Every player gets frustrated when they are not playing, and I am no exception. I would say I’m frustrated that I haven’t played as much as I would have liked to help the team," Onyeka told SportsBoom.com.
Onyeka was previously linked with moves to Spanish side Valencia and Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, but the midfielder chose to remain at Brentford and fight for his place in the squad.
Praise for Kayode’s impact
Despite his own challenges, Onyeka was quick to praise teammate Michael Kayode, who has emerged as an important player for Brentford this season.
The Nigerian-Italian defender is particularly noted for his long throws, which Onyeka believes have become a valuable attacking weapon.
"I’m impressed with Kayode. He came here while I was out on loan last season, and coming back to see him playing almost every game is incredible."
"His long throws, in particular, are very impressive, and it’s something we really value. At Brentford, we pay a lot of attention to set pieces, so his long throws are very helpful."
No major change under new manager
Onyeka also reflected on the transition from former Brentford manager Thomas Frank to current head coach Keith Andrews.
Frank, who signed Onyeka for the club, has since departed to join Tottenham Hotspur, but the midfielder believes the club’s approach has remained consistent.
"There isn’t much difference between the two managers. I think Keith worked with Thomas Frank while he was here, and when he took over after Frank left, the philosophy stayed almost the same. He’s doing well," he concluded.
