Former Man United Keeper Delivers Verdict on Michael Carrick’s Future as Permanent Manager

Chris Turner, one of Britain’s most well-known former goalkeepers, enjoyed a career at several top English clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, and Sunderland. He also spent three years at Manchester United from 1985 to 1988, playing under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom, Turner shared his insights on the current Manchester United team, discussing the season’s performances, the progress of young goalkeeper Lammens, and comparing the approaches of former coach Ruben Amorim and interim manager Michael Carrick.
Manchester United’s Performances This Season
After a significant summer investment, Manchester United aimed to elevate their level and compete at the top of the Premier League. While the season has had its ups and downs, the club’s fortunes improved under Michael Carrick, and they are currently third, on course for a Champions League spot.
“They are third now in the Premier League, which is an amazing result since Michael Carrick has taken over. He has restored confidence, he has got them playing on the front foot. They are playing quicker now, so I am delighted to see them in the position they are,” Turner told SportsBoom.com.
“Obviously, they are not going to be challenging for the title this season, but I do believe that their confidence has been restored, and now they are in a better position than in the past,” he added.
Ruben Amorim vs. Michael Carrick
The season began with Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim at the helm. Despite heavy investment in the squad, results under Amorim were inconsistent, leading to his dismissal and the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager.
“Personally, I think that Ruben was an experienced manager to manage a team of the caliber of Manchester United. I strongly believe that he will become a top manager,” Turner added.
“He believed a lot in himself, and he got tied down by sticking to one system, believing in that system, and not realizing that it was not going to work in the short term in order to get the results required, which could keep him away from the pressure that is always there for a Manchester United manager. For me, he lacked what is required in order to be a Manchester United manager."
Turner praised Carrick’s impact on the squad.
“Well, I don’t think he has brought a tremendous amount of change. I think what he has done is give back to the players the confidence they had lost, he has put the players in positions that are more favorable to them. I think the signings of the summer have proved to be good, and Carrick has got them to play on the front foot, playing attacking football and restoring joy and happiness to the fans.”
The difference between Amorim’s and Carrick’s United, according to Turner, is clear.
“Just the players being more confident, the players playing in the roles that suit them best, and being more positive. I think that in the final third, the team is playing better now and is being more threatening towards the opponent's goal,” he said.
“I think that the striker Sesko is having a great run of form, also coming from the bench. I think that you can see that the players are playing with confidence, and it’s making a massive difference."
Lammens: A Long-Term Solution
Manchester United has experienced instability in the goalkeeper position in recent years. Their summer signing of the young Belgian keeper Lammens was intended to bring long-term stability. Turner is impressed by the youngster’s performances so far.
“Yes, I do see him as a long-term solution for the Red Devils. I think he has been calm, he has done his job, and he hasn’t made any real mistakes or has let any bad goals come in."
“I think he has given confidence to the players in front of him. People are not talking a lot about him because he is doing his job and he is doing it well."
The Future of Manchester United’s Manager
Carrick is currently serving as interim coach, and Manchester United’s board faces an important decision about who will lead the club next season. Turner believes the Red Devils should aim high.
“I think that Manchester United are at the level of clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and they are and should be in the hunt for the best managers in the world."
“If they can’t get that type of manager, then I think Michael Carrick should be the choice going forward, and allow him to build a reputation as a top manager. So, for me personally, I like Michael Carrick, but as I said before, Manchester United should always look for the top managers around the world,” he concluded.
