Andre Onana knows his future could lie in Saudi Arabia after being axed from Cameroon’s AFCON squad, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
It is understood that the keeper has been told his Manchester United career is over after two ill-fated seasons at Old Trafford.
The summer arrival of Senne Lemmans has helped turn United's fortunes around somewhat this season.
Onana is currently on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor, which was a move completed late into the transfer window, and manager Ruben Amorim has moved on from the 29-year-old.
The stopper's career at Old Trafford was littered with a long list of costly errors during his 102-game spell at the Red Devils.
Our sources have been told Onana was unhappy at the pay cut after United failed to qualify for European football this season due to having people is his homeland who depend on him financially.
Onana has played at a number of big clubs during his career, but his performances in recent years have left him without any big-name suitors in Europe’s top leagues.
The player is contracted at United until 2028, but the club are keen to get his wages off the books in the summer.
Saudi Arabia Pro League clubs have previously expressed an interest in the under-fire stopper and United bosses are hopeful they will reignite their interest at the end of the season.
Additonally, reports back in September had continued to link Manchester United with a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, with speculation suggesting a January bid, but those rumours have largely quietened as the transfer window approaches.
Strong Pedigree
Onana came through the ranks at the Samuel Eto’o academy before moving to Barcelona.
He went to Ajax in 2015 and made 214 appearances for the club as they won a hat-trick of successive league titles and came runners-up in the Europa League in 2017.
At the end of his contract, Onana penned a five-year deal at Inter Milan where he got a Championship League runners-up medal in a 2022/23 campaign which saw the club with the Coppa Italia.
Erik ten Hag, who coached Onana at Ajax, signed the keeper for around £45million in 2023 — winning the FA Cup in his first season in Manchester.
