Robert Lewandowski is contemplating international retirement, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Polish legend, 37, suffered heartache in his bid to fire the national side to this summer’s World Cup.
It was last-gasp heartbreak for the nation as Viktor Gyökeres’ 88th-minute winner secured Sweden a late 3-2 victory at Poland’s expense.
Lewandowski, who has captained his country with distinction over the years, would have been one of the oldest players at the extravaganza in USA, Canada and Mexico.
And given he will in his 40s the next time a World Cup rolls around, sources close to the situation expect Lewandowski to retire from international duty.
“He has given everything to Poland and has nothing left to prove,” a source told SportsBoom.
The Barcelona hitman briefly retired from national duty last year, stating he would not play under coach Michal Probierz, and returned to the fold as captain after Probierz resigned.
But Lewandowski is set to call time on a record-breaking 18-year career with the national side.
The icon is the country’s all-time record goalscorer with 89 goals in 165 games, which is also a national record.
Lewandowski has played over 50 games more than the next highest capped player for the country.
All Good Things Come To An End
The 12-time Bundesliga champion also has a decision to make regarding his club future this summer.
His Barcelona contract is up and he is yet to be offered a new deal at the club.
Sources understand Barca are set to open discussions over a new contract, but are likely to only offer the player a one-year extension.
As reported by SportsBoom last month, there are a number of clubs on high alert given Lewandowski’s star power, including Manchester United.
He still remains one of the best centre forwards in Europe, netting 17 goals this season.
