What Is a Transfer Fee in Football?

Football is the premier sport in the world and transfers are a big part of the game as it is a global marketplace and the top footballers move clubs regularly. 

Some of the biggest names in the history of football have played in different countries and even on different continents. For example, David Beckham (England, Spain, USA, Italy and France), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia), Lionel Messi (Spain, France and now USA) and Neymar Jr (Brazil, Spain, France and now Saudi Arabia). 

Every transfer window we see clubs spending millions of dollars to sign top players. All professional football players sign contracts with their clubs for a fixed term. If another club wants to sign the same player before their contract expires, the club have to pay compensation to the other club, this is known as the “transfer fee”. 

A loan deal is a temporary move that allows a player to move to another club for a fixed amount of time agreed upon by the two involved clubs. Talking about loan deals, if any fee is involved, it is called a “loan fee”.

There is no cap on how much fee a club can spend on any player. It normally depends on the magnitude of the individual player, remaining contract timeline, form, injuries and many other sub-factors. 

All transfers take place in the two transfer windows, set out by FIFA regulations. The longer summer window falls between the off-season time around the start of the new season and the winter window takes place mid-season usually from the start of January to the end of the month. The exact dates and timings may vary in different countries. 

Another common question asked around football transfers is who gets the transfer fee. Usually, the club selling the player gets the transfer fee. However, this may be different in some cases. For example, Ousmane Dembélé received half his €50m transfer fee during his move from Barcelona to PSG as a part of “a transfer obligation” between the club and Dembele.

Usually, the players are paid a signing-on bonus and sign a new contract with the details of salaries and bonuses with their new club. This is not all, the agent or agency who facilitated the transfer is also paid a fee called the “agent fee”.
