Barcelona vs Villarreal Preview: Odds, Tips and Prediction

Barcelona is now inherently embroiled in a title race in La Liga. At the time of writing, they sit in second place, but they will no doubt feel as though they are in the driving seat. Villarreal, on the other hand, are also battling for a spot in European involvement next season and will know that a positive result here will keep them relevant in this quest. This is a fixture often associated with goals galore, and given the recent domination of Barcelona at home and the consistency of Villarreal, there is no reason to expect this to be any different. On paper, it looks as though it is a straightforward bet for punters wanting to enjoy a bet on La Liga, but as we know, football isn’t played on paper.

Barcelona Current Form – WWWLL

The hosts come into this game with an impressive current form and confidence. They have played incredibly consistently in the league, although their performances elsewhere have left a lot to be desired. Their greatest weapon so far this season has been their home form, though. Their dominance in front of their home fans is largely the reason they find themselves in a competitive environment and a chance to claim yet another La Liga title.

Their possession stats under Hansi Flick have been another point worth considering this season. Averaging around 60% ball retention in all competitions this season, they have just struggled to convert this into meaningful conversions in front of goal.

This season, the Catalans have been a lot more defensively sound. Conceding fewer chances and enjoying a positive clean sheet record for their defensive shape and approach. This Villarreal side will be a test, but the hosts will find confidence in their defensive ability here.

Key Players to Watch

  • Robert Lewandowski: The Polish veteran remains a consistent presence in this Barcelona side and has enjoyed another fantastic season. He hasn’t always been a starter, but even on the biggest stage, he remains a player they are able to turn to and deliver something special for the hosts.
  • Frenkie De Jong: He truly is a maestro in the midfield. Dictating their pace and tempo, his creativity and movement through the middle of the pitch have largely been responsible for when Barcelona unlock opposing defences and find entry into the final third. He is certainly one to keep an eye on here.
  • Lamine Yamal: Lamine Yamal is still only a teenager, but his impact remains consistent, and talking about Barcelona without mentioning him just isn’t something you can do these days. He is a generational talent and continues to show that week in and week out. His pace and flair on the Barcelona flank remain vital to their success, and he will be one to keep an eye on here.

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona has to contend with a few injuries, among them are Pedri, who is battling a muscle strain, Andreas Christensen, who is still managing his ACL, and both Gavi and Marcus Rashford, who are recovering from knee injuries.

Villarreal Current Form – LDWLW

As the old adage goes, Villarreal is frankly their own worst enemy at the moment. Their inconsistency continues to cost them vital points in the league, but they are still relevant in their push for a European spot next season.

They are incredibly flexible tactically, which makes them a difficult side to play against in the league. They are happy to sit back, absorb a lot of pressure before launching their counterattack, but at the same time, they are able to make the most of moments where they are able to retain the football.

Barcelona is a side they have struggled to contend with in recent times, but they have no choice but to attack their hosts and make the most of their visit to the Nou Camp – an approach likely to translate into a rather open game of football.

Key Players to Watch

  • Ayoze Perez: The forward has been vital for Villarreal so far this season. He continues to be in the right place at the right time and always carries a very real goal-scoring threat. He has struggled at times for confidence this season, but his quality and ability can never be questioned here. Keep an eye on him for sure.
  • Pape Gueye: He isn’t always a player who will steal all of the limelight in a fixture, but his creativity and technical gift around a football is simply among the very best in the game at the moment. He delivers forward and penetrative balls throughout the game and will likely be the link they look to from midfield here.
  • Rafa Marin: His experience in La Liga will be put to the test here. He will know he comes up against serious opposition, but his no-nonsense approach will likely be valuable in their effort to repel Barca’s attacking threat.

Villarreal Team News

The visitors will need to contend with a few serious injuries here. At the time of writing, their injury list extends to an incredible seven players! Alfonso Gonzales, Dani Parejo, Gerrard Moreno, and Willy Kambwala are all out with muscle injuries. Juan Foyth is sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury, and Logan Costa is struggling with an ACL injury. Pau Cabanes is also out with a knee injury and will miss this encounter.

Predicted Line-Up

  1. Barcelona: Garcia, Kounde, Cubarsi, Araujo, Balde, Lopez, De Jong, Olmo, Yamal, Lewandowski, Raphinha.

  2. Villarreal: Junior, Cardona, Marin, Navarro, Mourino, Moleiro, Gueye, Comesana, Pepe, Mikautadze, Perez.

Suggested Bets

These are our confident picks, the sort of betting suggestions that justify you putting that entire Welcome Bonus down for generous returns.

  1. Over 2.5 Goals: Given the recent head-to-head trend and attacking quality on both sides. (4/7 with BetWinner).

  2. Both Teams to Score – Yes: Villarreal rarely fails to score, even away. (17/20 with Betway).

Value Bets

  1. Robert Lewandowski – Anytime Goalscorer: He remains the designated penalty taker and focal striker. (5/6 with Betway)

Prediction: Barcelona to Win and Both Teams to Score

Barcelona are favourites to defend their home record, but for more value, we suggest combining these two betting aspects for more value. Barcelona, and their depth, make it difficult to see past their winning chances, but the attacking prowess of Villarreal will cause them to ask questions of Barca’s defensive structure and possibly find their reward.
