Birmingham City will attempt to lure Che Adams back to St Andrews after being promoted back to the Championship.

The audacious bid for the striker, which sources have confirmed is being considered by the club’s owners, is a sign that Chris Davies’ side are prepared to spend big in order to achieve Premier League status next term.

Adams, aged 28, is currently tied to Serie A outfit Torino having moved to Italy last summer.

But he spent three years in the west Midlands earlier in his career; scoring 38 goals in less than 130 appearances before completing a £15m transfer to Southampton.

Adams is contracted to Paolo Vanoli’s team for another 24 months, meaning City will have to dig deep into their admittedly very minted pockets in order to lure him away from the Stadio Olympico Grande.

But with their owners - a USA based company whose investors include NFL legend Tom Brady - showing they are prepared to flex their financial muscles, Torino could be tempted to consider selling Adams despite his encouraging performances since moving to Europe.

LAVISH PURCHASE

Birmingham Sports Holdings lavished £15m on striker Jay Stansfield nine months ago, even though they were competing in the third tier of English football at the time.

They also raised Queens Park Rangers, prising Adams’ fellow Scotland international Lyndon Dykes, away from Loftus Road in another ominous statement of intent.

If City can also acquire Adams, then it would equip them with one of the most powerful strike forces in the English Football League.

However, after running away with the League One title, amassing a remarkable 111 points and finishing 19 ahead of second placed Wrexham, Brady and chairman Tom Wagner are determined to build upon that momentum by completing more attention-grabbing deals.

Before joining City in 2016, Adams also represented Sheffield United having been spotted by then manager Nigel Clough whilst playing at non-league level for Ilkeston Town.
