Liverpool are ready to step up their pursuit of Romanian international Andrei Rațiu by tabling a concrete offer for the highly-rated Rayo Vallecano defender, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

New Reds boss Andoni Iraola is determined to strengthen his options at right-back despite already having Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley at his disposal, with the Spaniard keen to ensure Liverpool has genuine strength in depth across the squad ahead of his first season in charge at Anfield.

Frimpong arrived as the long-term successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold and is expected to be Liverpool's first-choice right-back, while academy graduate Bradley remains highly regarded by the club.

But SportsBoom understands Iraola wants another proven option capable of competing immediately at the highest level.

Rațiu has emerged as one of the leading names on Liverpool's shortlist after building a reputation as one of La Liga's most effective full-backs.

The 28-year-old has spent the last three seasons with Rayo Vallecano, making 102 appearances for the Spanish club since arriving in 2023.

RELENTLESS

Known for his pace, power and relentless energy, the Romanian combines attacking threat with solid defensive qualities and is viewed as a player capable of adapting quickly to the demands of the Premier League.

Rațiu came through the famed Villarreal academy before moving on to Huesca, where his performances caught the attention of Vallecano.

His stock has continued to rise ever since, with the defender becoming a key figure for club and country.

Capped 38 times by Romania, Rațiu has represented his country at the senior level for the last six years and was previously named Romanian Footballer of the Year.

He also helped Rayo Vallecano reach the UEFA Conference League Final in 2026, finishing as a runner-up after a memorable European campaign.

VALUE

Liverpool believes the defender would represent excellent value despite an asking price expected to fall between £25million and £30million.

The biggest hurdle remains his contract situation. Rațiu only signed a new long-term deal with Vallecano last November and is tied to the Spanish side until June 2030, leaving the La Liga club under little pressure to sell.

Even so, there is growing confidence at Anfield that a sizeable offer, backed up by attractive performance-related add-ons, could tempt Vallecano into cashing in on one of their most prized assets.

With Iraola eager to put his own stamp on the squad, Liverpool are expected to press ahead with negotiations in the coming weeks as they attempt to land one of Romania's most highly-rated stars before the new season gets underway.

Liverpool’s interest is likely to be very appealing for Rațiu, with a Premier League move a clear step up and a strong pull for the player. Rayo’s long contract still makes this complex, but if Liverpool follows through with a serious offer, it’ll be difficult to turn down. From a betting angle, Liverpool now looks the more likely destination if the deal gathers pace.
