Burnley want to sign loan wing-wizard Marcus Edwards this summer, but Manchester United and a number of other Premier League clubs are understood to be interested in securing the sought-after player’s signature, according to sources close to SportsBoom.
Sporting CP ace Edwards, who can also play as an attacking midfielder, joined the Clarets on loan at the start of February, teaming up with Burnley boss Scott Parker, who he knows from his Tottenham Hotspur Academy days.
Parker is understood to have been fundamental in tempting the 26-year-old to Turf Moor as the Lancashire club gun to get back in the Premier League.
The Clarets are currently third in the Championship and just two points adrift of a top two automatic promotion place with nine league fixtures remaining this season.
Edwards has impressed since his arrival in the North West of England and bagged his first goal for Burnley in the FA Cup as the Clarets stunned Premier League Southampton at the start of last month.
The former Spurs’ Academy graduate netted his first league goal for his loan club in a 4-0 home demolition of Sheffield Wednesday, also in February.
PREMIER LEAGUE PROMOTION
If Parker and his team can achieve promotion to the top-flight, then SportsBoom understands the manager has a better chance of securing Edwards’ services with Sporting CP ready to sell this summer if the price is right.
Edwards is highly-regarded by a number of clubs having risen through the England international youth ranks, having represented his country at every level from the Under-16s right up to the Under-20s.
He was part of the successful Young Lions’ side which won the UEFA Under-19 European Championship in Georgia in 2017.
Born in Enfield, the player spent three seasons playing for Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Portuguese Primera League, where he scored 20 goals in 95 appearances in all competitions.
He impressed that much that former Sporting CP boss – and now Manchester United manager – Ruben Amorim signed him for his side for a reported £6.5million in January 2022.
Edwards won the league title with Amorim last season and scored 24 goals in 120 in a successful three-and-a-half seasons with the club.
