Leeds United are in talks to extend Dan James' contract ahead of their Premier League return, SportsBoom have been told.
The Welsh winger has been one of the standout performers in the Championship this season and has been a pivotal part of Daniel Farke’s side’s promotion this term.
Aged 27, James is entering his prime years and the former Swansea City youngster has really come of age in the past two campaigns.
His current deal at Elland Road ends in the summer of 2026 and Leeds are desperate not to allow him to leave as a free agent next summer — something they have fallen foul of in recent years with other big names.
The Welsh international is a firm fan favourite and has been one of their star performers after navigating an initial sticky patch during his spell at the Whites.
His exploits this season saw him shortlisted for the EFL's Championship Player of the Season Award.
He was pitted alongside Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Sheffield United playmaker Gustavo Hamer, with the latter scooping the prize.
James, who has produced better output than the Blades' man this term, told local reporters after the vote: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit disappointed. Two other great players. Congrats to Gustavo.”
PREMIER LEAGUE POINT TO PROVE
James’ contributions to Leeds’ promotion will no doubt have caught the eye of a number of potential suitors.
But they will want to see how he fares back at the pinnacle of English football after a less than impressive record in the top flight in the past.
No doubt he is a different animal to the one who endured a tough two-year spell at Manchester United and then sent out on loan to Fulham following his first season in Yorkshire.
