Rangers Eye Red Star’s Ebenezer Annan to Bolster Fragile Backline

Rangers are eyeing Red Star Belgrade defender Ebenezer Annan to strengthen their defence. The highly-rated Ghanaian left-back is a target for the Scottish champions, with concerns raised over current left-back Jefte's disciplinary record. Annan has impressed this season, helping Red Star to their 11th Serbian SuperLiga title. If he moves to Rangers, Annan could still play in the Champions League next season.

Rangers have expressed an interest in signing Red Star Belgrade defender Ebenezer Annan to sure up their leaky defence, SportsBoom sources can reveal.

The highly-rated Ghana international left-back, 22, is contracted to the Serbian club until 2027, but it is understand the 55-time Scottish Premiership champions are hungry to secure a deal this summer and prize the player away for a stint in Scotland.

The Gers have Brazilian Jefte and Turkey’s Ridvan Yilmaz for the left-back slot, but Annan is viewed as a real prospect for the future having snapped up by Red Star last year.

Worryingly Jefte has picked up 11 yellow cards this season and was sent off in only his second game for the club, a 2-0 home loss to Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League.

    DISCIPLINARY CONCERNS

Sources at Ibrox have aired their concerns about Jefte’s disciplinary record, while Yilmaz is more of a midfielder and is versatile enough to slot in at full-back when needed.

Annan started his career with Italian side Bologna and impressed on loan spells with Imolese and Novi Pazar before Red Star came calling.

Capped three times by his country, the defender is believed to be hungry to test himself in another country.

He has impressed this season for Red Star, having made 31 appearances with the club who have powered to an impressive 11th Serbian SuperLiga title with six games to spare.

Amazingly, Red Star have not lost a league game all season, with Annan having played a key role in the club’s rock solid defence.

They have won 28 of their 30 league games and are 23 points clear of second-placed FK Partizan have blown away any competition this year.

However, the club have struggled in the Champions League this season and, if Annan does move, he would still get the chance to play in Europe’s elite competition with the Gers next season.
