Andre Onana’s Manchester United nightmare looks set for a dramatic final chapter after the out-of-favour keeper was told he has no future at Old Trafford, with Trabzonspor preparing a fresh raid, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
SportsBoom understands the Cameroon international has effectively been frozen out of United’s long-term plans and is now heading towards the exit door on loan again for next season.
But while the Turkish giants are desperate to keep hold of Onana after his impressive revival, there is one huge stumbling block standing in the way of a permanent deal.
United splashed a massive £47million to land the former Inter Milan keeper in 2023, and Trabzonspor have little chance of matching anything like that fee.
Instead, SportsBoom understands they are exploring another season-long loan move and are willing to cover the stopper’s wages as part of the package.
Onana is believed to be earning around £125,000-a-week at Old Trafford, a figure Trabzonspor have managed to handle during his current spell in Turkey.
COMEBACK MISSION
Privately, Onana had been hoping for a route back into the United side and believed he might get one last chance to rescue his career at the Theatre of Dreams.
But that comeback mission now appears dead in the water.
Belgium keeper Senne Lammens has stormed into the number one spot this season, and insiders insist he is going nowhere.
The youngster grabbed his chance with both hands after Onana’s catalogue of costly blunders opened the door, and he has never looked back.
Those errors left serious question marks hanging over Onana and ultimately handed Lammens the opportunity to shine.
Ironically, Onana has rediscovered his confidence in Turkey.
MAJOR ROLE
The 30-year-old has impressed for Trabzonspor and played a major role in helping them reach the Turkish Cup final, producing the sort of displays that convinced United to spend huge money on him in the first place.
But despite rebuilding his reputation abroad, his path back at Old Trafford now looks completely blocked.
United also have highly rated keeper Radek Vitek waiting in the wings, although Bristol City are pursuing him, as SportsBoom exclusively revealed last week.
Onana still has two years remaining on his United deal, and United chiefs are understood to be open to another loan move, as long as somebody else picks up the wages.
For Onana, the message coming out of Old Trafford could not be much clearer. Time is up.
