Austrian Open 2025 Preview: Odds, Tips, & Predictions

Date: 29 May-June 1 Venue: Gut Altentann GC, Salzburg Defending champion: John Catlin It’s been a rather busy few weeks on the DP World Tour, and the European Swing continues with the Austrian Open. Curiously, the Austrian Open is returning to the DP World Tour schedule for the first time in four years, and the American John Catlin is the defending champion, having prevailed in a play-off.

Given the proximity of this tournament to the US Open, the third Major of the campaign, expect a flurry of odds from the finest golf betting sportsbooks, including specials and player props.

Staged at the picturesque Gut Altentann course that sits just outside Mozart’s home town Salzburg, the Jack-Nicklaus-designed track measures over 6,700 yards in length, but it plays as a par-70.

There is water in play on no fewer than 11 holes, and the 18th has been extended in length to 523 yards, playing as a tricky par-5.

An emphasis will be placed on strategy rather than length from the tee, and this course could represent a stern challenge. More significantly, it is the first time this tournament has been hosted at Gut Altentann in 23 years.

Like the Soudal Open, the prize fund for the Austrian Open is $2.75 million, and there are 3,500 Race to Dubai ranking points up for grabs. Ahead of the first round, we have provided a full golf tournament preview and shared some odds to influence our golf tournament predictions.

Pre-Tournament Betting Odds and Win Probability

Although it’s been a while since the Austrian Open was last featured on the DP World Tour, we’re interested in the pre-tournament betting odds.

We have scooted over to one of the top sports betting operators to gauge who is trading as the favourites.

  1. Joost Luiten – 6/1 (7.00) – 14.3%

  2. Ewen Ferguson – 8/1 (9.00) – 11.1%

  3. Jordan Smith – 10/1 (11.00) – 9.1%

Key Player Updates

Although many golf bookmakers will be replete with odds, we relish getting to grips with key performance metrics, such as driving and iron play, which can provide some clues as to how some players might perform.

Based on the prices for the favourites, we have drilled down the data, and the following golf stats for betting should prove to be useful.

Contender News

For any given tournament, assessing the chances of the potential contenders should be a vital part of your research.

Having crunched through the numbers, we have explored the recent form of Joost Luiten, Ewen Ferguson, and Jordan Smith to see how they are looking ahead of the Austrian Open. Doing this should aid you with executing your picks and golf betting strategies.

Joost Luiten

A seasoned player on the DP World Tour, Joost Luiten has chalked up six career wins, and he appeared to be in fine fettle at last week’s Soudal Open, which he said felt like a “home event” for him.

The Dutchman was tuned in with his putting, and he’s searching for his first title since 2018 which gives you an idea of how hard it can be to enter the winner’s circle.

His driving has been solid as has been his GIR, and the latter has provided his best returns on the Tour this term. Luiten, who has had a flurry of top-20 finishes recently, is always a colourful character, and he could go strong this week.

Ewen Ferguson

Despite sitting in 77th spot in the Race to Dubai rankings, Ewen Ferguson is also a multiple winner on the DP World Tour, picking up three career wins.

His maiden victory at the Commercial Bank Qatar Open in 2022 provided the springboard, and he caught our attention at the BMW International Open last year, surging to victory with a total of -18.

Ferguson hasn’t been setting pulses racing of late as he’s been in and around the top 30, however, he has been driving the ball well which will be a key factor this week. The Scot could well be in the mix come the weekend.

Jordan Smith

Coming off the back of an impressive week at US Open qualifiers where he topped the leaderboard at Walton Heath, Surrey, to secure his spot at the third Major, Jordan Smith is in a good spot at the moment.

While he’s been impressive with the irons, one important stat often overlooked is stroke average, and Smith is fourth in this performance metric this season (69.85).

Although he’s nabbed two DP World Tour wins to date, Smith would love to make it a third, and he usually makes for fun viewing. A victory would push him higher in the R2DR as he’s currently 20th, and he could provide some fireworks.

Suggested Bets

To offer some value, we’ve checked back in on our preferred golf betting sites, and supplied a few more golf betting tips.

We’ve shared some more suggested golf betting odds that are worth exploring if you want to steer away from the main outright market.

  1. Joost Luiten to be the leader after Round 1: Joost Luiten felt comfortable at the Soudal Open last week, storming into a share of the leader after an opening round of -6. Across the board, he has been strong in the opening round of tournaments, firing five rounds of sub-70 in his past six outings. The first-round leader market is normally available at the best betting sites for golf, and we’re going with Luiten to be at the summit of the leaderboard after Thursday’s play (13/5 with Betway).

  2. Jordan Smith to clinch a top-10 finish: Jordan Smith has been making serious strides this term, and the Volvo China Open represented a key turning point as he finished runner-up. That marked his first top-10 finish since the Nedbank Open back in December last year. Smith followed up his performance at the China Open with a T7 at the Turkish Open. His approach play has been superb this term, and another top-10 finish may beckon for the Englishman (7/3 with 1xBet).

  3. Austrian Open to be decided by a play-off: The last couple of editions of the Austrian Open have been very tight, and the 2021 tournament was decided on a play-off. We don’t think there will be a runaway winner this time around either, so extra holes may be needed to decide the champion (11/6 with BetWinner).

Tournament Prediction

The Austrian Open’s return should make for fascinating viewing. Jordan Smith will have been delighted to seal a US Open berth, and he will be looking to fine-tune his preparations ahead of the next Major. Despite his impressive stats this term, perhaps we shouldn’t overburden him.

Ewen Ferguson, meanwhile, will be eager to climb the Race to Dubai rankings, but his results suggest he hasn’t provided much of a challenge of late, so we might be best to avoid him.

Instead, we ought to go for Joost Luiten. He has come out of the gate strong in the past few weeks, posting impressive first round scores. His results are trending in the right direction too, so he’s our pick to win this weekend.

If you’re considering a punt, this could be a good time to explore betting sites with welcome bonus, especially with Luiten showing solid early form.
