In many respects, this tournament is a birdie fest, and since 2009, the average winning 72-hole score has been around -20. Being hot with the putter is a necessity, but as this course plays just under 7,300 yards, you don’t need to be big off the tee.
There aren’t too many long par-4s, but there are some great risk-reward pins, making it an appetising prospect pros.
Davis Thompson comes into this event with a target on his back after clinching the title in routine fashion 12 months ago. A final round score of -7 saw him surge to a four-stroke victory (-28) to leave his rivals trailing in his wake.
A prize purse of $8.4 million is in the offing, and there are 500 FedEx Cup points up for grabs. But who will take the spoils? We’ve provided a comprehensive golf tournament preview for this event and this has been accompanied with golf betting odds for you to mull over.

Contender News
Having pored over the main stats, we have examined the credentials of the key players, assessing past performances on the PGA Tour as well as their record at the John Deere Classic.
Going through this in detail will shape our golf tournament predictions, so let’s see how the land lies.
Ben Griffin
While his meteoric rise might have taken some golf betting sites by surprise, Ben Griffin is firmly in the groove. Indeed, two wins and eight top-10 finishes have seen Griffin soar to fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings.
Yes, Griffin has finished no lower than 14th in his past five PGA Tour outings, and he has looked dialled in at the Majors too. While his driving accuracy is a bit down compared to his rivals, he has looked assured with the flatstick, faring well in the SG: Putting department.
A T5 on his debut appearance at TPC Deere Run was marked by four rounds in his 60s, and he is capable of going very low. He could well catch fire this week.
Davis Thompson
As reigning champion, there will be a burden of expectation on Davis Thompson. While his driving has been steady, his putter has been a little cold.
Judging by his SG: Putting and Putting Average stats, this is a cause for concern; however, Thompson will rekindle fond memories of his fairytale ending at TPC Deere Run last year, where he outclassed his rivals, crossing the finishing post with consummate ease.
His form has been a bit mixed, but you wouldn’t want to discount him!
Nico Echavarria
A player who was arguably a bit late to the party but is truly starting to shine! Yes, Nico Echavarria has caught our eye with his supreme putting, and he was in glorious form at the Rocket Classic last weekend.
Throughout the tournament, he barely put a foot wrong, and a pair of 66s underlined his quality. Yes, his driving stats are a bit on the low side, but if he can engineer a few birdie opportunities this weekend, he could be in the mix
Suggested Bets
To round off our golf betting tips, we have picked out three value lines that might be worth exploring further.
Davis Thompson to clinch a top-10 finish: Mounting a successful title defence on the PGA Tour is always a tough order, and while Davis Thompson is carrying plenty of favour, his form has wavered a little bit over the past few months. The John Deere Classic could provide the perfect pick-me-up, but we’re more inclined to back him to finish in the top 10 (8/5 with BetWinner).
Ben Griffin to lead after Round 1: Ben Griffin has been a strong starter over the past few months, averaging around 66 over his past half a dozen appearances on the PGA Tour. The American was impressive last term with four rounds in the 60s, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he stormed into the lead here (9/6 with Stake).
Winner to be decided by a margin of 2+ strokes: There are always some great specials floating about for golf tournaments, including the winning margin. Judging by recent results, the typical winning margin has been two or more strokes. We’re going for this to be replicated this weekend (10/7 with Betway).
Tournament Prediction
There is plenty to play at the John Deere Classic, and it is a huge field, containing 156 players. Davis Thompson, who was a first-time winner on the PGA Tour at this event, has been relatively consistent lately, but he hasn’t exactly been scintillating, so we might steer clear of him.
Nico Echavarria, on the other hand, has been more dialled in with his putting, and he could be a big feature. However, Ben Griffin is one of those players who has gone from strength to strength this season, and with a couple of wins already under his belt, he could be a major threat here. We’re backing Griffin to come out on top this weekend.
