Nacho Elvira is the current reigning champion, so he will have a target on his back. However, the Soudal Open has a decorated history, and among the players featured on the roll of honour, includes Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, and Sir Nick Faldo.Bar a few hiatuses, the Soudal Open has been around since 1978, and Rinkven International GC, which has hosted the past few editions, is on the shorter side of things distance-wise, measuring under 7,000 yards.

There are plenty of birdie opportunities to be had on the back nine, and there is a Pro-Am taking place beforehand, which will feature former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Eden Hazard. But who will get their hands on the title this week?

We’ve shared some golf betting tips and suggested some golf betting strategies to inspire you ahead of the first round.

Part of the build-up to a DP World Tour event, involves churning through the golf stats.

While some golf betting sites will post a few stats, they might not be detailed or focus on the main performance metrics. We’ve filled in the gaps by giving the lowdown on the three main contenders, and assessing how they’ve fared in the driving and greens departments

Contender News

Many sites for betting on golf tournaments will shine a light on the favourite ahead of a DP World Tour event.

The Soudal Open will be no different. Having crunched through the stats and performance metrics, we’ve analysed the three main contenders, which has helped shape our golf tournament preview.

Martin Couvra

Currently eighth in the Race to Dubai rankings, Martin Couvra bagged a win last time out at the Turkish Open. He came racing out of the traps with a 65 in the first round, and he completed his weekend with a stunning 64.

The Frenchman fares well for GIR (70.09%), and he will need to be imperious with the irons if he’s going to fend off the competition.

It will be fascinating to see how he gets on, and even though recording back-to-back wins on the DP World Tour can be tough, we wouldn’t put it past him!

Francesco Molinari

A six-time winner on the DP World Tour, Francesco Molinari doesn’t always rank highly in the pre-tournament betting odds. Like Pieters, Molinari’s outings on the DP World Tour have been rather sparing this term, although he did finish T2 at the Team Cup in January.

We’ve been more accustomed to seeing the Italian on the PGA Tour this term, and of his performance stats, his driving accuracy percentage (63.08%) bodes well, and he will look to make inroads.

Whether he can break his seven-year trophy drought remains to be seen, but he could be a surprise package.

Thomas Pieters

As the home favourite, there will be some pressure on Thomas Pieters to deliver. Pieters is one of the standout players in the 156-man field, and he will rekindle fond memories of the Soudal Open, having finished T2 there last year.

Appearances have been few and far between for Pieters on the DP World Tour this term. On his previous outing at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship back in January, Pieters didn’t make the cut for the weekend.

Nevertheless, when he is dialled in, Pieters is strong from tee to green, and it would be great for the patrons to see a Pieters victory. He could well be in the mix come the weekend.

Suggested Bets

We’re always on the hunt for value golf betting odds. So, with that in mind, we’ve scooted back over to the finest golf bookmakers to share some suggested lines that are worth exploring further.

  1. Martin Couvra to win the Soudal Open: There was plenty to shout home about with Martin Couvra at the Turkish Open, and even though he’s only 22, Couvra displayed maturity to get the job done. Bar a bad day at the office at the China Open, where he missed the cut, Couvra has been largely consistent, and he could well step into the winner’s circle again this weekend (27/5 with N1Bet).

  2. Thomas Pieters to seal a top-10 finish: Despite his lack of DP World Tour involvement, Thomas Pieters is one of those players who can produce moments of magic, and he’s done well at the Soudal Open in the past. A top-10 finish could beckon for him once again (11/4 with Betway).

  3. Matt Wallace to be the highest-placed Englishman: The best betting sites for golf love to plug a good special, and after a productive week at Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship, we expect Matt Wallace to continue that form into the Soudal Open. Wallace to finish as the highest-placed Englishman shouldn’t be scoffed at (4/1 with BetWinner).

Tournament Prediction

The past couple editions of the Soudal Open have been low-scoring, and last year, Nacho Elvira wound up on -18 to deliver the title, but he hasn’t come into our thinking this week.

Naturally, there will be plenty of interest in Thomas Pieters, who will carry the flag for his native Belgium. While he is capable of producing great things, he hasn’t convinced us that he could end his three-year barren run on the DP World Tour this week.

Francesco Molinari’s run extends longer, and while he would be a popular winner, we’re leaning more towards Martin Couvra with our golf tournament predictions. Couvra was rock-solid at the Turkish Open, and this course could be to his liking, so we’re backing him to come out on top.
