Americans have been using that expression “What a dildo” for the better part of the past 9 years, especially when it comes to politics. Dildos have become such a common part of American sexual culture that the esteemed New York Times actually reviews them, calling them by their more common name, vibrators.
But this article has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with women’s basketball, dildos, and wagering.
Court Chaos Meets Gambling Odds
Ever since fans started tossing dildos onto courts during Women’s National Basketball Association games, a trend that began July 29 when the first dildo was flung during an Atlanta Dream vs. Golden State Valkyries matchup, the matter has become an entertaining side show that has infuriated some, entertained others, and has provided for water cooler talk at those few American offices that are actually staffed with humans this August.
And for the wagering site sportsbetting.ag, the trend has provided the offshore book with an opportunity to offer gambling lines on a topic that none of the U.S. based sportsbooks will touch. (Insert your own “touching a dildo” joke here.)
"The creativity these books have never ceases to amaze me. We're in the slowest time on the sports calendar and they figure out a way to not only get eyes on their brand, but also attract more attention to the WNBA. From a publicity standpoint, it was a win-win for all parties involved," said industry expert Scott Cooley of Cool Media PR.
The sportsbook posted lines on the color of the next dildo thrown, whether it would match the color of the Gatorade that is annually tossed over the head of the winning coach at the Super Bowl, whether a player or someone else (a referee, an arena employee, a coach or a spectator) would be the first to touch the next tossed dildo.
Last Friday in a game between the Atlanta Dream and the Chicago Sky, bettors who wagered on purple cashed at odds of +500 as the first non-green dildo was tossed after three variants of the Green Monster were the offending phallic simulators during the first three dildo tossing interruptions.
Currently, “rainbow” has the longest odds, +700, to be the next variety of dildo to land somewhere on a court at one of the 13 arenas that play host to the premiere U.S. women’s league, which is now in its 29th season of existence. A “rainbow” dildo must be comprised of at least three colors. Green is the -135 favorite, followed by purple at +300.
Crypto Creators Throw Their Hat (and Dildos) Into the Ring
According to the Huffington Post, cryptocurrency creators are now taking credit for throwing sex toys onto the court at multiple WNBA games, saying they intended to stir up controversy and promote their memecoin.
The self-confessed dildo-throwers say they launched the memecoin Green Dildo Coin on the Ethereum blockchain on July 28, a day before the first dildo-tossing incident. After Barstool Sports reported on the group’s identity on Wednesday, the price of the coin skyrocketed.
Clearly, tariffs are not the only area in which Americans are being hyper-creative these days.
The sex toy props turned out to be incredibly popular, often attracting more total bets than individual WNBA games, and BetOnline.ag reported that, overall, it has lost money on the dildo props.
"Green was by far the most popular bet during the frenzy, but purple was a big payout at 5/1 when the copycat thrower decided to divert from green on the fifth dildo. We were just praying a rainbow-do didn't fly."
No word yet on whether any sportsbook will offer prop bets on inflatable dolls being floated onto the court at a men’s game, but let’s not forget that the regular NBA season remains more than 2 months away.
For now, here is the state-by-state breakdown of where the wagers are coming from, and on what:
Green - 16 states
Black/Brown - 9 states
White/Caucasian tone - 9 states
Blue - 5 states
Purple - 4 states
Red/Pink - 4 states
Rainbow - 3 states
