After making a clear statement of intent by thrashing Auckland City 7-0, Bayern Munich square up against Argentine giants Boca Juniors in their second match at the FIFA Club World Cup. In typical South American fashion, Boca Juniors are anticipated to make it a cagey contest that will better suit their style of football.

The German champions had a few players arrive late to the USA after international duty but are expected to be at full strength ahead of this clash. Meanwhile, Boca Juniors are sweating over the fitness of their captain and talisman Edinson Cavani.

One of the favourites to go all the way to the final, Bayern Munich will shift into second gear as we approach the knockout stages of the tournament. It’s shaping up to be another thrilling match in a packed schedule.

BAYERN MUNICH: CURRENT FORM – WWDWW

Bayern Munich regained their place at the summit of the German Bundesliga spearheaded by English captain Harry Kane, scoring 38 goals and tallied 13 assists from 46 appearances across all competitions for the Bavarians.

This was Kane’s first major title since making the switch from Tottenham the previous season – a campaign in which Bayern Munich were outclassed by Xabi Alonso’s history-making Bayer Leverkusen. Now, with his first taste of championship-winning champagne, Kane is looking to satisfy his unrelenting hunger for FIFA Club World Cup glory.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Harry Kane: For those eyeing a value-packed outright bet, Harry Kane to finish as Top Goalscorer at 7/1 is well worth considering. With only Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland ahead of him in the market, the odds offer solid appeal. The England captain is a relentless goal scorer and thrives on the big stage.
  • Kingsley Coman: With Leroy Sane reportedly set to leave, Kingsley Coman is likely to see more game time – crucial as he looks to secure a spot in France’s 2026 World Cup squad. He’s already made a statement, scoring twice against Auckland City.
  • Jonathan Tah: Securing Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen for under one million euros represents incredible value – and could prove pivotal in taking Bayern Munich to the next level.

BAYERN MUNICH TEAM NEWS

Jamal Musiala’s fitness is the main injury concern, as he continues his recovery from a torn muscle bundle. The creative midfielder is a joy to watch with his quick feet, sharp turns, and ability to unlock defences. He’s drawn comparisons to Neymar for good reason.

With the tournament taking place in the U.S., this is a great chance for Musiala to make a name for himself ahead of the 2026 World Cup. If he gets the minutes, he’s sure to excite American crowds and remind everyone why football is called the beautiful game. For now, he’s expected to feature off the bench in the group stage, with a bigger role likely as the competition progresses.

Sane will play for Bayern despite sealing a transfer to Galatasaray ahead of the new season with Kompany claiming, “He's still our player. As a club, we look at what is important for us. Jamal (Musiala) isn't fully fit yet and we didn't want to lose a player in attack. That gives us time to integrate Jamal (Musiala) back. Leroy (Sane) was also keen to come here - this signal was important to us. He finished the season strongly with us and he will be a player who can pose a threat every minute. We will use everything we can to achieve our goals.”

Meanwhile, first-choice centre back pairing Dayot Upamecano (cartilage damage) and Minjae Kim (Achilles tendon problems) are doing their best to return to full fitness, with left-back Alphonso Davies expected to come back at the end of September after suffering a cruciate ligament tear.

BOCA JUNIORS: CURRENT FORM – WLDDL

Argentine giants Boca Juniors secured their place in the FIFA Club World Cup as the second-highest-ranked team in CONMEBOL’s four-year ranking system.

Young manager Fernando Gago left for the Mexican Liga MX with the veteran Miguel Angel Russo taking over the reins at Boca Juniors, ahead of their opener against Benfica. The Blue and Gold find themselves at the top of the Argentine Primera Division, suggesting their decision was based solely on the experience of cup competition specialist Russo who claimed the 2007 Copa Libertadores title for Azul y Oro.

Prior to the Benfica match, Boca Juniors won nine of their previous 13 games with three defeats against Newell's Old Boys, River Plate and Independiente, while sharing the spoils in a (1-1) stalemate with Tigre.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Edinson Cavani: El Matador has been having injury troubles, suspected to have played the second half of the Copa Libertadores clash against Independiente with a lumbar fracture, worsening the issue. Currently on the mend, from a calf muscle tear in the Superclasico loss to River Plate, Cavani is essential to Boca Juniors performing well.
  • Miguel Merentiel: Known as ‘The Beast,’ Uruguayan striker Merentiel has built a great understanding with Cavani up front. He usually comes off the bench in the second half and makes a real impact. But in the three games before the tournament, Merentiel earned starts and delivered two goals and two assists, making a strong case for a spot in the starting lineup.
  • Milton Delgado: The diminutive defensive midfielder has been touted for a big move to Europe. Not related to Marcelo Delgado, the former Argentine forward who was shown a red card in the 2001 Intercontinental Cup final loss to Bayern Munich. A massive opportunity for the 19-year-old to prove his worth against the likes of German captain Joshua Kimmich.

BOCA JUNIORS TEAM NEWS

Summer signing Ayrton Costa has been granted a 26-day special visa after the former Royal Antwerp centre-back missed the initial flight with the entire team, due to passport issues. First-choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been included in the squad despite not being fully fit.

With veterans like Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Cavani, and Romero forming the backbone of Boca Juniors, their experience is perfectly balanced by the youthful energy of Delgado and Kevin Zenon, making them a tough team to beat.

PREDICTION: BAYERN MUNICH TO WIN

Boca Juniors aim to keep themselves in contention for the knockout stages. Their best chance of making their dreams come true will be taking points off Bayern Munich ahead of their final game against Auckland City.

However, they’re in for a stern test against a solid Bayern Munich team that is firing on all cylinders, boasting plenty of depth in each position. We anticipate a closer contest than initially forecasted with Bayern Munich eventually flexing their muscles to claim maximum points at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
