PDC World Darts Championship 2025: MVG Hits Back at Chris Dobey's 'Nonsense' Remark
Michael van Gerwen reflects on his World Championship quarterfinal win, the unpredictability of set play, and dismisses Chris Dobey’s comments ahead of their semi-final clash.

Michael van Gerwen showcased his championship pedigree in the second quarterfinal of the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship, overcoming Geordie outsider Callan Rydz 5-3 to secure his ninth semi-final appearance in the tournament.
In a match brimming with the drama of darts’ set-play format, Rydz outperformed the three-time world champion in nearly every statistical category. The Geordie ace hit more 180s, achieved a higher three-dart average, and even won more legs over the course of the gruelling encounter. Yet, it was van Gerwen who emerged victorious, proving that experience and timing often outweigh raw numbers.
Van Gerwen now turns his attention to a semi-final clash with Chris Dobey, Rydz’s friend, and fellow Geordie, who will be making his debut in the final four of the World Championship.
Rydz’s performance has been one of the stories of the tournament, and while his quarterfinal exit will sting, it is a testament to his rising stature in the sport.
MVG on the Magic of Set Play
Reflecting on the match, van Gerwen brushed aside the surprising statistics that saw Rydz outscore him in key areas.
“Did he have more 180s than me? Really? I don’t care,” said the Dutchman with characteristic confidence.
“What’s the stats mean… three-five,” he added, emphasising the only number that mattered—the final scoreline.
Van Gerwen highlighted how the set-play format can deliver unpredictable outcomes, making the World Championship uniquely challenging.
“This is why the World Championship is a very dangerous tournament. I think Gerwyn Price was the better player over [Chris] Dobey, but in moments when you have to play well, you have to play well in each set,” he told SportsBoom.com.
“The set format is totally different than leg format, but a lot of people don’t see it that way. But I’ve been in this game for quite a long time so I can judge it,” he explained.
Summing up his approach, van Gerwen added with a grin: “Experience is really important, but a little talent helps as well.”
Responding to Dobey’s Comments
Looking ahead to his semi-final against Chris Dobey, van Gerwen was asked about comments Dobey made after his quarterfinal win. Dobey, buoyed by his friendship with Rydz and his own strong form, suggested he would prefer to face the three-time champion in the next round.
“It’ll probably be a bit easier playing Michael [van Gerwen] than it will Callan [Rydz],” Dobey told the media.
Unfazed, van Gerwen dismissed the remark in his typically blunt style.
“People when they win, they talk a lot of nonsense,” he concluded.
Van Gerwen will now aim to prove Dobey wrong as he continues his quest for a fourth World Championship title.
