Michael van Gerwen Eyes Fourth World Matchplay Title After 17-13 Victory Over Michael Smith.
In a rematch of the memorable 2023 World Darts Championship final, the 2024 World Matchplay semifinal featured a clash of the titans as Dutch superstar Michael van Gerwen faced off against St Helens' own Michael Smith.
The two Michaels battled fiercely in a race to 17 legs, with a coveted spot in the 2024 World Matchplay final at stake.
Topsy-Turvy Start
The early stages of the match were marked by unexpected and confusing play, as both players struggled significantly with their doubles. Despite Smith's spectacular scoring, his poor finishing left him trailing 4-1 to the Dutchman, heading into the first interval.
However, Smith didn't let his early struggles get the better of him. He swiftly turned the tide in the next five legs, matching van Gerwen's 4-1 mini session to level the game at five legs apiece in under 15 minutes of darting action.
MVG Pulls Away
Bully Boy faced another nightmare mini session as van Gerwen launched an impressive run, clinching the next four legs to pull ahead 9-5.
Smith managed to salvage the next leg with a brilliant 11-darter, but van Gerwen was starting to pull away decisively.
The St Helens native improved his performance over the next five legs, but he still trailed 11-9 behind the Dutchman.

Fourth World Matchplay Title?
At times, Smith appeared to be on the ropes, but he managed a rapid comeback to level the game at 12-12. Although just as he seemed to be gaining control, MVG delivered a stunning 136 three-dart checkout to break Smith's throw and regain the lead at 13-12.
In the following three legs, Smith struggled, losing control of his darts while the dutchman surged to a 16-12 advantage.
Smith managed to win one more leg, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. Van Gerwen closed out the match with a 17-13 victory.
Van Gerwen will now face world number one and reigning world champion Luke Humphries in the final, where he will be aiming for his fourth World Matchplay title.
