ES Tunis have the opportunity to make history by upsetting the applecart against a world renowned powerhouse in Chelsea. The Tunisian club are still in contention for qualification from Group D after edging out a (1-0) victory over LAFC, while Chelsea suffered a shock defeat to Brazilian club Flamengo.
Chelsea’s loss to Flamengo left many fans frustrated with their team’s performance, initially expected to make light work of their Group D rivals. Although, as we approach the knockout stage, the stakes at the CWC are being raised with Flamengo expected to qualify as Group D leaders.
ES Tunis will need to be at their tactical best to contain Chelsea’s attacking threats, while capitalizing on set pieces and counterattacks. With momentum on their side and little to lose, could the underdogs pose a serious challenge to the much-fancied favourites? Esperance kept themselves in the hunt for qualification from Group D, in dramatic fashion courtesy of Tunisia’s first-choice goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said’s heroics. With immense pressure mounting on the crucial 100th minute penalty being the difference between ES Tunis clinching maximum points with a (1-0) victory against LAFC, or having to settle for a share of the spoils, Ben Said came to the rescue with a strong left handed save.
“Gave us the feeling that we can keep playing.” ES Tunis’ coach was thrilled by the opportunity of continuing their FIFA Club World Cup journey in high spirits.
Maher Kanzari has only tasted defeat twice since being appointed manager at The Beast of Africa, earlier this season. His first match at the helm of ES Tunis was a narrow (1-0) defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final clash away in South Africa.
Their second loss under Kanzari was an unsettling (2-0) defeat at the hands of Brazilian club Flamengo in their CWC opener. ES Tunis had to bounce back against LAFC in their following game, withstanding an early onslaught by the MLS club who were flagged offside three times in the first half after finding the back of the net.
Ultimately, soaking up constant waves of LAFC attacks to score their only goal of the tournament through Algerian forward Youcef Belaili and hang on by the skin of their teeth after Ben Said made an incredible save, moments before the final whistle.
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
Elias Mokwana: The South African winger has a bright future ahead of him. Mokwana has been a favourite of his national team coach Hugo Broos since the early stages of his career at Sekhukhune United. Aiming to cement his position in the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 25-year-old will look to cut in on his left foot from the right wing to expose any chinks in Chelsea’s defence between Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill.
Rodrigo Rodrigues: Constant hamstring injuries have hampered the striker since making the switch move from Brazilian club Juventude, two seasons ago. However, during the second half of the previous campaign, Rodrigues marked his return with goals in consecutive games against EGS Gafsa and Club Africain. He justified the €350,000 price tag Esperance spent to bring the Brazilian to Tunisia. With Belaili suspended, the onus of putting the ball in the back of the net will fall squarely on Rodrigues’ shoulders.
Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida: The 29-year-old left-back possesses the ability to read situations well, enabling him to get involved in the attacking part of the game to influence attacking transitions with his precise crosses into the focal point of attack, Brazilian striker Rodrigo Rodrigues. Ben Hamida is also dangerous while making underlapping runs, regularly finding Belaili with defence-splitting passes and then becoming a nuisance to opponents by adding numbers in the final third with late runs.
ES TUNIS TEAM NEWS
Youcef Belaili will be unavailable after picking up yellow cards, in both games against Flamengo and LAFC. The Algerian forward’s suspension will be sorely felt, blending a mixture of speed and power combined with the courage to win every duel, possessing a quality striker’s instinct of being in the right place at the right moment.
Belaili came closest to finding the back of the net against Flamengo and scored the winner against LAFC. The best chance of Esperance finding a foothold on the game would have been through Belaili either scoring or registering an assist.
Meanwhile, ES Tunis’ manager highlighted that his troops had little time to mentally prepare after finishing their domestic season, just three weeks ago. “This timing is the worst period for a coach and player to meet. It’s when most injuries happen. Mentally, the players are not fully ready, it’s a difficult time, no doubt.” Kanzari explained.
CHELSEA: CURRENT FORM – WWWWL
Chelsea navigated through an intensely competitive fixture list during the business end of the last campaign, enroute to sealing qualification to the UEFA Champions League and claiming the UEFA Conference League title.
The Blues have suffered two losses in their last six games, winning four of those games under heavy pressure in Enzo Maresca’s first season in the hotseat. Following the autopsy of both defeats to Newcastle United and Flamengo, it can largely be narrowed down to striker Nicolas Jackson receiving red cards, on both occasions for making unnecessarily dangerous tackles.
Eager to have an impact for his club, Jackson issued an apology on social media afterwards, "Another red card… And honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear, it wasn't intentional. Just a moment in football that went the wrong way.”
"No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. The Senegalese striker wrote.
"Sorry. Sorry. Sorry." But unfortunately, it seems like the writing is on the wall for Jackson after the recent arrival of Liam Delap and possibly another centre forward to bolster the Blues forward line before the much-anticipated 2025/26 Premier League season begins.
However, one could argue that despite both costly red cards, Jackson is yet to significantly cost Chelsea, as the Blues still achieved their 2024/25 season objectives. The Premier League giants are fully expected to display their class against ES Tunis to reach the CWC knockout stages.
Speaking after the loss to Flamengo, Chelsea boss Maresca admitted to making few experiments to their tactics with next season in mind, “Unfortunately, we conceded two goals in a very short period, a very short moment and then the red card. Then it’s very complicated to come back into the game.
“I think we tried to do something different during the game, also for next season, but congratulations to them. Now we have one more game and we are going to try to win the next one.”
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Pedro Neto: The Portuguese winger has been in sensational form for club and country. Fresh after lifting the UEFA Nations League title, assisting teammate Nuno Mendes for Portugal’s first goal in the final against Spain, Neto joined up with Chelsea in USA to score in both games against LAFC and Flamengo. At times in this tournament, his blistering speed seems to be Chelsea’s primary weapon in getting behind opposition defences.
Liam Delap: The young English prospect hasn’t had the platform to display his talents as yet, but the responsibility is now fully on his shoulders with Jackson being suspended. Wearing the number nine jersey has been a challenging task for the best strikers across Europe but what separates Delap from the rest is his willingness to work off the ball and his aggressive nature on the field of play.
Enzo Fernandez: Hailing from South America, Fernandez thrives on getting stuck into midfield battles, while being afforded the license to get into the box to score valuable goals by midfield anchor Moises Caicedo. The 24-year-old stated “My goal against LAFC was my eighth of the season. That is a good number, it’s good in one season and I am thankful to God for this. But for me, this is still just the beginning. I’m always going to want more. I always want to do better.”
“And if I can do that, I will be helping the team. This is always on my mind. It’s why I work hard and try to improve, and with Enzo [Maresca], I am playing further forward, which has helped with my statistics. Next season, though, I want to score more goals and give more assists.”

PREDICTION: CHELSEA TO WIN
ES Tunis have given a good account of themselves at the FIFA Club World Cup but will surely require a football miracle to take maximum points from English Premier League club Chelsea. The Blues need a minimum of a draw in order to proceed to the knockout phase of the tournament. However, with a few CWC games under their belt and the possibility of facing either Bayern Munich or Benfica in the next round – expect Chelsea to impose their dominance over the CAF region heavyweights.
