The Hammers were thrashed by Chelsea (1-5) in their first London derby this season. Later, they were knocked out of the EFL Cup by struggling Wolves and bounced back with a victory against an out-of-sorts Nottingham Forest (0-3).

The inconsistent start to the season has been far from ideal, with another massive test in the form of Tottenham on the cards. Meanwhile, Thomas Frank’s men had their perfect beginning to the Premier League campaign snapped with defeat to Bournemouth.

West Ham must address their defensive vulnerabilities and improve transition play to overcome Tottenham’s tactical discipline.
As both teams aim for successful returns to Premier League action, expect ferocious pace, barbaric battles and very little room for error. Stay ahead of the game with reliable football betting tips and predictions this Premier League weekend.

West Ham Current Form – LDLDL

Manager Graham Potter began his first pre-season campaign with a disappointing defeat to Manchester United (2-1), bouncing back with victories over Everton (2-1) and Bournemouth (0-2), before sharing the spoils in a 1-1 stalemate against French Ligue 1 club Lille, eventually winning the tie 5-4 on penalties.

On match day one of the 2025/26 Premier League season, The Hammers endured a surprise 3-0 loss away at the Stadium of Light against newly-promoted Sunderland. Things went from bad to worse in the next game as Potter was thrashed (1-5) on home soil by his former employers, Chelsea.

In EFL Cup action, West Ham were leading the tie by a narrow 2-1 margin away to Wolves at the Molineux Stadium, with 30 minutes left on the clock, surrendering their passage to the third round after conceding two goals to Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen in the space of two minutes.
West Ham finally got off the mark as Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Callum Wilson stole all three points in the final 10 minutes against Nottingham Forest.  The dramatic late win offers a glimmer of hope for Potter’s troops; however, serious questions remain about their defensive frailties and overall inconsistency early in the campaign.

Key Players to watch

  • Lucas Paqueta: The 28-year-old midfielder is aiming to score in his fifth consecutive game after netting goals against Chelsea, Wolves (EFL Cup), Nottingham Forest and during the international break for Brazil in the 3-0 win over Chile. Constant involvement during build-up play and final-third entries has translated into more frequent scoring opportunities.
  • Jarrod Bowen: Combining relentless work rate with intelligent movement, Bowen can exploit the space behind defences, contributing both goals and assists, which make him vital in attacking transitions. Bowen scored for West Ham at the London Stadium during Tottenham’s last two visits.
  • Crysencio Summerville: The 23-year-old is knocking on the door for a starting berth after tallying assists against Aston Villa in the FA Cup and Nottingham Forest in Premier League action. Summerville’s creativity and dribbling threat have added a new dimension, making a strong case for regular inclusion in the starting XI.

West Ham United Team News

West Ham manager Potter has signed a host of players with very little Premier League experience under their belts. They recently recruited Mateus Fernandes (Southampton), Jean-Clair Todibo (Nice), El Hadji Malick Diouf (Slavia Prague), and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen (Leicester City).

It will take a period of adjustment for these new signings to rally together and put in solid performances on a weekly basis. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme continues to recover from a broken collarbone injury sustained in the defeat to Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur Current Form – LLWLL

Tottenham went unbeaten in three pre-season games, sharing the spoils with Luton Town (0-0) and Newcastle United (1-1), while narrowly edging crosstown rivals Arsenal (0-1).

Newly-appointed manager Thomas Frank then tasted his first loss against Bayern Munich (4-0), before an unforgettable UEFA Super Cup final with Paris Saint-Germain. Tottenham surrendered a two-goal cushion in the space of 10 minutes, cruelly losing the tie 4-3 on penalties.
There were many positives from pre-season, giving confidence to Spurs’ beloved fan base. Going into the first Premier League clash, Tottenham ran out comfortable (3-0) winners against newly-promoted Burnley.

Their next performance against Manchester City, upsetting the applecart with a shock (0-2) victory at the Etihad Stadium, got the attention of Premier League fans worldwide.

Tottenham’s poor game management in the final moments against PSG cost them silverware, while the win over Manchester City proved that it was no fluke but rather a well-calculated and well-executed Thomas Frank plan.

Frank was outclassed tactically by Bournemouth (0-1) on home soil at the London Stadium, suffering his first Premier League loss as Tottenham manager, with Cherries’ striker Evanilson scoring a magnificent goal to decide the encounter.

In the upcoming week, Tottenham are set to begin their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign against the Yellow Submarine, Villarreal.
Villarreal represents more than just the first hurdle; the Spanish club offer Tottenham an opportunity to make a statement of intent in order for Frank to cement his blueprint in Europe’s most demanding club competition.

Key Players to watch

  • Mohammed Kudus: All eyes will be on Kudus when the former West Ham winger returns to his former home, the London Stadium. Bringing flair and versatility to Tottenham’s attack, combining sharp dribbling with incisive passing. Kudus has enjoyed a sparkling start to life as a Spurs player, quickly endearing himself to Tottenham’s fans.
  • Richarlison: Recently nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award, the Brazilian striker Richarlison will be aiming to continue his excellent start to the season under the tutelage of Thomas Frank. He scored an unforgettable acrobatic goal against Burnley on the opening day to signal his intent for the upcoming season.
  • Lucas Bergvall: The 19-year-old creative midfielder is a promising talent, able to unlock defences with his range of passing in the final third. With the likes of defensive midfield stalwarts, Pape Matar Sarr, Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur providing solidity in the heart of the midfield, Bergvall brings a much-welcomed creative element to the table.

Tottenham Team News

“The status is very good and I will be on a football pitch in the very, very near future. If everything goes as it should, as it has so far, I am very confident that I will be on the pitch in two to three months.” The Swedish international added.

PREDICTION: TOTTENHAM TO WIN

West Ham are unbeaten in five home matches when hosting Tottenham, with the last three games ending in 1-1 stalemates, indicating that we’ll have a cagey and hard-fought London derby on our hands.

Meanwhile, these two managers know each other very well after pitting their wits against each other in the Championship while Potter was Swansea boss and Frank was in the process of promoting Brentford to the Premier League.

In seven meetings, Potter has left victorious five times against teams managed by Thomas Frank. Adding to the narrative, Potter's tactical edge could prove decisive in what promises to be a tightly contested clash.

However, with the spotlight on the former West Ham star, Mohammed Kudus, it would be fitting for the winger to score the deciding goal and break the hearts of his former fans.
