Brentford have entered the race to sign Chelsea starlet Josh Acheampong after opening early discussions over a deal for the highly-rated defender, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest young prospects to emerge from Chelsea's academy in recent years and has attracted growing interest from across the Premier League following his breakthrough campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Acheampong, an England Under-21 international, is already being monitored by Arsenal, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, while Bournemouth are also understood to have retained a strong interest after tracking him over the last 12 months.

Now Brentford have joined the queue for the versatile defender, who can play centre-back as well as right-back and left-back if needed.

The Bees are keen to strengthen their defensive options this summer and have identified Acheampong as a player capable of becoming a long-term fixture in their side.

Club officials have held initial conversations as they assess whether a deal can be struck with their west London neighbours.

Newly promoted Coventry City have also enquired about Acheampong's services; however, a one-year loan deal is the most likely outcome if Frank Lampard were to secure a deal.

VALUATION

Chelsea rate Acheampong highly and see him as a player with a huge future in the game. However, our sources inside the club have indicated the Blues would be prepared to listen to offers if the valuation is met.

A figure in the region of £25million has been suggested as the level at which Chelsea could consider doing business.

But SportsBoom understands Brentford are hoping they can negotiate a deal closer to the £18million-£20million mark, believing there is significant value in a player they view as one of the country's most exciting young defenders.

The defender remains under contract until 2029, meaning Chelsea are under no pressure whatsoever to sell. That strong negotiating position is expected to make talks difficult for any interested club.

Despite his limited first-team opportunities last season, Acheampong enhanced his reputation with a series of composed performances whenever called upon by Chelsea's coaching staff.

He made 17 Premier League appearances during the campaign, although nine of those came from the substitutes' bench, and his displays convinced several top-flight clubs that he is ready for a more prominent role.

REPUTATION

Brentford's recruitment team have built a reputation for identifying young talent before their value explodes, and they believe Acheampong could develop into a top-level Premier League defender over the coming years.

Whether Chelsea are willing to part with such a prized academy graduate remains to be seen, but interest in the youngster is gathering momentum as the summer transfer window approaches.

With Arsenal, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth all keeping a close eye on developments, Brentford know they could face fierce competition if they are to land one of English football's most sought-after young defenders.

The race for Acheampong is heating up, and the Bees are determined to be right in the middle of it.

Our view is that this one won’t move quickly. New Blues boss Xabi Alonso is expected to want a close look at Josh Acheampong in pre-season before any final decision is made on his future.

For now, the smart betting angle is that a summer exit looks more likely later in the window rather than immediately, with Chelsea still holding the strongest hand in negotiations.
