Celtic Consider Shock Move For Ex-Liverpool Boss Arne Slot After Anfield Exit

Arne Slot’s departure as Liverpool boss sent shockwaves throughout the Premier League, with the ripple effect reaching north of the border, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
So much so that Scottish Premiership and Scottish FA Cup winners, Celtic, are understood to be changing tack, or at least considering a new approach, to their search for a new permanent manager.
A host of candidates have been mentioned as successors to French flop Wilfried Nancy, including the current temporary incumbent, Martin O’Neill.
O’Neill, 74, will be considered should he wish to continue after the Hoops’ double success.
One-time Spurs target, Robbie Keane is also in the running despite Ferencvaros missing out on the Hungarian title by one point to ETO Györ.
But Slot’s availability has piqued the interest of some members of the Parkhead hierarchy, desperate to turn the Glasgow outfit from a domestic powerhouse into European challengers.
In his final season as Feyenoord boss before departing for Anfield, Slot faced Celtic twice in the Champions League, winning one and losing the return fixture.
Celtic were also linked with an emotional reunion with former boss Ange Postecoglou earlier this year following his dismissal by Nottingham Forest, though any return to Parkhead ultimately failed to materialise.
MASTERMIND
He later moved to Liverpool in succession to Jurgen Klopp and masterminded Liverpool’s 20th Premier League title.
However, that success couldn’t cushion Slot from criticism that came his way during the last term as Liverpool limped to fifth spot and a Champions League place.
But his stock remains high despite the views of departing Anfield legend Mo Salah, a critic of Slot’s conservative style compared to Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ football.
AC Milan are reportedly keen to take Slot to Serie A as a replacement for Massimiliano Allegri, with outgoing Crystal Palace gaffer, Oliver Glasner, in contention too.
And despite the last 12 months, Slot would be a popular appointment with the Celtic Park fans.
Indeed, he would be following in the footsteps of another ex-Liverpool manager. Brendan Rodgers fell out of favour at Anfield in 2015 only to re-emerge as Celtic chief the following May.
Editor's Insight
Arne Slot would represent a bold and ambitious appointment for Celtic. While interest from bigger European leagues could prove difficult to overcome, his track record of developing teams and competing in Europe makes him the type of manager capable of elevating the Hoops beyond domestic dominance. Betting markets may soon reflect whether Celtic's interest is genuine or merely exploratory.
