Cristian Romero has told Tottenham he wants to stay and help drive the club's revival despite a frustrating campaign in North London last season, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Argentine defender endured a difficult season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs flirted dangerously with relegation before eventually surviving by the skin of their teeth on the final day.

Romero's campaign was disrupted by disciplinary issues, and he also found himself under fire from sections of the Tottenham support after missing the club's crucial final Premier League game of the season.

With Spurs needing a positive result to secure their top-flight status, many fans questioned the absence of their captain at such a pivotal moment.

Despite the criticism, SportsBoom understands Romero has informed club chiefs he is happy to remain at Tottenham as the club begins a major rebuild aimed at climbing back up the Premier League table.

The 28-year-old, capped 52 times by Argentina, believes he still has unfinished business in North London after four seasons with the club.

INFLUENTIAL

Romero remains one of the Spurs' most influential players and is determined to play a leading role in helping restore stability following a turbulent period that has seen a succession of managers lose their jobs.

Romero featured in 23 Premier League matches last season and chipped in with four goals from the heart of the defence.

Although his performances were occasionally overshadowed by controversy, there is no doubting his importance to the squad when fit and available.

His long-term future appeared secure last summer when he signed a contract extension that ties him to Tottenham until 2029.

However, his situation has continued to attract attention from elsewhere.

Manchester United, Brentford and Crystal Palace are all understood to be monitoring developments surrounding the centre-back

Each club is believed to admire Romero's aggressive style, leadership qualities and top-level experience.

PREFERENCE

But the former Atalanta and Genoa defender has made it clear that his preference is to remain with Spurs rather than seek a move away this summer.

Sources close to the situation suggest Romero's commitment is linked to assurances over the club's direction.

The defender is understood to want guarantees regarding recruitment plans and the long-term vision as Tottenham attempts to rebuild after several disappointing seasons.

With a new campaign on the horizon, Romero believes Spurs have the foundations to improve significantly if the right additions are made.

The Argentine is keen to remain at the heart of that project and lead by example as Tottenham look to put last season's struggles firmly behind them.

After months of uncertainty and speculation, Romero's message appears clear: he wants to stay, he wants to compete, and he wants to help drag Spurs back towards the upper reaches of the Premier League.

Romero’s reported U-turn makes a Spurs exit look unlikely for now. We’d still expect him to stay, with Tottenham firm favourites in the market and any interest elsewhere more speculative than serious.
