Inter Milan powerhouse Alessandro Bastoni has been identified as the ideal replacement for Ibrahima Konaté, with new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola eager to bring the experienced Italy international defender to Anfield this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Reds are preparing for life after former Premier League winner Konaté, who is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, and Bastoni has emerged as the club's leading defensive target as Iraola begins his rebuild on Merseyside.

Liverpool's recruitment team believe the Italy international possesses the experience, leadership and technical quality required to fill the huge void left by Konaté's departure, while the 27-year-old's ability to play progressive football from the back makes him a perfect fit for Iraola's high-energy system.

Bastoni has emerged as one of Europe's most accomplished defenders after enjoying a glittering spell with Inter Milan.

The former Atalanta academy graduate joined the Nerazzurri in a deal worth around £27million and has gone on to make close to 300 appearances for the club across seven seasons, developing into one of the most highly regarded centre-backs in world football.

During his distinguished career, Bastoni has won three Serie A titles and helped Inter establish itself among Europe's elite.

HEARTBREAK

He has also experienced the heartbreak of finishing as a Champions League runner-up on two occasions, underlining the consistency with which Inter have competed at the highest level.

On the international stage, Bastoni was part of Italy's victorious Euro 2020 squad and has since earned 43 senior caps for the Azzurri, cementing his status as one of the leading defenders of his generation.

SportsBoom understands Liverpool believes the defender could be open to a fresh challenge after spending the entirety of his senior career in Italy.

Bastoni is thought to be intrigued by the prospect of testing himself in the Premier League, with the opportunity to prove his quality in English football regarded as a significant attraction.

Iraola has made no secret of his desire to build a squad capable of competing for the biggest honours and is understood to view Bastoni as the type of marquee signing capable of transforming Liverpool's back line immediately.

DETERMINATION

Speaking after taking charge at Anfield, Iraola delivered a clear message to his squad, insisting: "For me, you're all new signings."

The Spaniard has also spoken of his determination to "earn the right to belong" at Liverpool as he looks to usher in a new era at one of football's biggest clubs.

Liverpool knows prising Bastoni away from the San Siro will not be straightforward, and any deal is likely to cost in excess of £70million.

Inter remain keen to retain one of their prized assets, but the Reds are expected to test their resolve as the summer transfer window gathers pace.

Landing a player of Bastoni's calibre would send a powerful statement to Liverpool's Premier League rivals.

And for Iraola, it could provide the perfect foundation upon which to build the next great Liverpool side.

Liverpool’s interest in Bastoni fits the profile of a statement signing under Iraola, but Inter are notoriously tough negotiators and are expected to demand a huge fee. At this stage, a deal feels ambitious rather than likely, with betting markets more reflective of interest than probability. Value may sit elsewhere unless talks accelerate quickly.
