Manchester United are ready to axe Manuel Ugarte and launch a summer swoop for West Ham starlet Mateus Fernandes as Michael Carrick begins a huge midfield shake-up at Old Trafford, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Ugarte has endured a nightmare spell since his £42.5million arrival from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, and United are now prepared to cut their losses on the struggling midfielder.

The Uruguayan battler arrived with a big reputation but has failed to win over the Old Trafford faithful and now looks set for an early exit, with several clubs already circling over a potential move.

United are back in the Champions League, and Carrick knows he needs serious quality and strength in depth if his side is going to compete on all fronts next season.

POWERHOUSE

Dream target Elliot Anderson remains high on the wanted list, but Nottingham Forest are expected to demand a staggering £100million plus for the sought-after England international, who is also being chased by Manchester City.

Real Madrid and France international powerhouse Aurélien Tchouaméni has also been linked, although his price tag could hit between £70million and £80million.

That has pushed West Ham ace Fernandes firmly into the frame.

The 21-year-old Portugal international midfielder is thought to be available for around £50million and has admirers inside Old Trafford.

United skipper Bruno Fernandes is believed to be a huge fan of his fellow countryman and sees his younger namesake as the perfect fit to inject fresh energy into Carrick's midfield.

REINFORCEMENTS

United have also tracked Brighton ace Carlos Baleba, Atalanta midfielder Ederson and Crystal Palace and England star Adam Wharton during their search for reinforcements.

But SportsBoom understands Fernandes would jump at the chance to seal a move to Manchester.

Following West Ham's shock relegation to the Championship, the talented midfielder is desperate to stay in the top flight, and it is understood a clause in his contract could pave the way for a quick exit.

With Ugarte heading for the Old Trafford trapdoor, United's summer rebuild is gathering serious pace.

United’s interest in Mateus Fernandes makes sense from a cost and profile perspective, especially with Bruno Fernandes reportedly involved in discussions. However, if West Ham hold firm on valuation or a release clause is triggered, this could quickly become a Premier League-wide scramble. At this stage, Old Trafford feels like the most likely landing spot if United move decisively early in the window.
