First Impressions
Reflecting on his arrival at Borussia Dortmund, Carney shared his initial reaction with palpable enthusiasm:
"Surreal, really. Just taking every moment in, you know, it's a massive club. Obviously, the Champions League final last season that I was grateful to watch as well."
"I watched a few of my friends play in it. But yeah, it's just a surreal feeling. I'm so happy to be here, and I can't wait to get started," he told SportsBoom.com.
The magnitude of the club and the electrifying atmosphere of European football are clearly resonating with him, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting chapter in his career.
Brotherhood Beyond Borders: The Jamie Gittins Connection
Chukwuemeka was born in Austria, however has been based in the UK since he was a youngster, he even represents England at youth international level.
One of the main factors that drew him to Dortmund, was to re-join one of his childhood friends, Jamie Gittens.
Discussing the influence of his fellow Brit, Carney revealed how shared history and camaraderie have eased his transition to the new environment:
"Yeah, me and Jamie are quite close, to be fair. We're in the same friendship group away from football as well, similar ones."
"But yeah, I actually knew of Jamie from when he was at Reading. Whilst I was at Northampton at the time, we used to play each other at young, young age groups around under 11 or so."
"And then, yeah, we both got our moves, him to City, me to Villa. And then we managed to meet up again."
"England under-19s, it was, won the Euros together. And since then, yeah, we've been close and have a very good bond."
This long-standing connection not only strengthens his resolve but also highlights the supportive network that exists among young British talents abroad.
On the Field
When asked about the unique qualities he brings to the table, Carney is unreserved in his confidence: "I'm a player who loves to express himself. I play with zero fear, in a way. I like to dribble, like to pass, link-up play, shoot."
"But I will always give my all for this, for this badge. I'm honestly so blessed to be here and grateful to be in this position. So, yeah, they can expect all of them things from me."
"And me giving my all, every single game."
The Dortmund Magic
Carney’s admiration for Borussia Dortmund is evident when he reflects on the club's legacy and the atmosphere that captivated him from his early days.
"Yeah, like the Champions League final from last season. The way they got there. And obviously, like a lot of people in my, let's say, English talents have come here and shown as well."
"Jude, Jadon, Jamie, now. So, yeah, it's just a big club for developing talents and a massive club in itself."
"Stadium's massive. Fans are amazing. I was lucky enough to be on the bench for Chelsea a couple of years ago when we played Dortmund in the Champions League."
"And yeah, I can just remember the noise. That I was hearing in my ears, the yellow wall and stuff. It was an amazing atmosphere."
The memories of the Champions League and the iconic "yellow wall" serve as a constant reminder of the club's inspiring legacy—a legacy that Carney is eager to be a part of.
A Dream Move
For Carney, the move to Dortmund is more than just a step up; it’s an opportunity to shine and develop further:
"I'd say it's a chance for me to express myself. Like they were, I can't thank them enough for the level of belief they've shown in me to get me here. So, that alone is a big part, played a big part for me to come here alone."
"But obviously, like I said earlier, the amount of talents they've helped develop and stuff. So, for me, that was, I think, the right step for me now to go showcase my talent in Europe, God willing, and bring success to all of us as a club."
This move represents the culmination of years of hard work and determination; a chance to both express his true self on the field and contribute to a club renowned for nurturing exceptional talent.
Capturing the raw emotions that come with such a monumental move, Carney summed up his feelings succinctly: "Yeah, buzzing, excited, blessed, grateful, all in one."
His words encapsulate the blend of excitement, gratitude, and anticipation that fuels his journey at Borussia Dortmund; a journey that promises to be as transformative as it is exhilarating.
